Chapter 10: Rosa’s Secret

Three days after Julian’s arrest, Eleanor and Alex took a quiet drive into Queens. They stopped outside a weathered two-story brick building on a quiet residential street—the modest apartment where Rosa had lived before her health failed.

The landlord handed Eleanor a dusty cardboard shoebox labeled: *FOR ELEANOR VANCE.*

Inside was a stack of yellowed photographs, a medical chart from 2019, and a handwritten diary.

Eleanor sat on the old porch swing with Alex by her side as she opened the diary to the first entry:

> *"I was the night nurse at St. Jude's. When the alarms went off and the smoke filled the hall, I saw Julian Vance turn off the sprinkler valves. I couldn't save the wing, but I took baby Alex out through the emergency fire escape. I knew Julian's power in this city; going to the police would have gotten us both killed. So I became a ghost to keep this angel alive."*

Eleanor’s tears fell onto the paper. Rosa had sacrificed her own career, home, and identity to raise Alex on meager wages and street survival, waiting for the right moment to return him safely.
