Chapter 12: A Mother’s Lesson

Life settled into a beautiful, healing rhythm at the Manhattan penthouse. Eleanor stepped down as CEO of Vance Capital, appointing a trusted ethics board to oversee the firm while she shifted entirely to running the foundation.

Every morning began not with board meetings, but with making pancakes together in the kitchen.

On Saturday mornings, Eleanor and Alex volunteered at the Manhattan youth shelter. Alex insisted on handing out warm winter coats personally.

"Look at this one, Mom," Alex said, holding up a warm fleece jacket. "This will keep someone dry when the snow comes."

Eleanor watched him with overflowing pride. Alex possessed an innate empathy that wealth could never buy. He remembered the cold, the hunger, and the unkind stares of passersby, and he used that memory not as a scar, but as a compass.

"You have a big heart, Alex," Eleanor said, kneeling beside him.
