Chapter 1: The Silver Hinge

The rain on Manhattan’s 57th Street turned the asphalt into a dark mirror. Eleanor Vance, managing partner of Vance Capital, stepped out of her towncar in scarlet patent heels. Her gaze caught a small huddled figure against the brick wall beneath the scaffolding.
The boy was barely seven, shivering inside an oversized grey hoodie. His trembling hands held a wet cardboard sign: *PLEASE HELP.*
Eleanor reached into her structured designer bag, pulling out an apple and a hundred-dollar bill. She knelt on the damp pavement, heedless of her bespoke camel coat.
"Here sweetheart, take this," she whispered softly.
The boy looked up. His hazel eyes carried an unnatural exhaustion. As Eleanor handed him the fruit, her gaze dropped to a dull metallic sheen resting against his chest. A silver heart-shaped locket hung from a tarnished steel chain.
Eleanor’s breath froze. Her fingers moved on instinct, trembling as she lifted the pendant. With a faint click, the silver hinge opened.
On the left was a portrait of Eleanor at twenty-four, laughing into a summer sun. On the right was an ultrasound image stamped with a hospital ID from seven years ago.
"Alex...?" Eleanor gasped.
The boy blinked through tears. "The lady at the shelter said my real mama had red hair."

Eleanor pulled him into her arms on the rain-swept sidewalk, burying her face into his damp shoulder as seven years of grief shattered into blinding reality.
