Chapter 7 - The Unseen Accomplice

The glowing screen flashed brightly against the dark mahogany table, casting an eerie blue light over Lisa’s trembling hands. The automated text message was brief, but its implications were devastating. It wasn’t from Mark, nor was it from the federal investigators who had just hauled him away. It was an urgent alert from an encrypted banking server, indicating that a secondary offshore transfer of five hundred thousand dollars had just been executed from an account bearing Lisa’s personal identification number.
"That's impossible," Lisa breathed, her voice dropping to a terrified whisper. "All my accounts were frozen by the federal investigator this morning. How is this even happening?"
Elena leaned across the table, her eyes narrowing as she pulled the phone closer to inspect the notification.
"An secondary account," Elena murmured, her calm demeanor fracturing slightly as real concern crept into her voice. "Mark didn't work alone. He told the investigators he was the mastermind, but this transfer requires a secondary authorization key. Someone else is still inside the system."
Lisa gripped Elena’s wrist, her fingernails digging into the fabric of her sleeve with frantic desperation.
"I swear to you, Elena, I didn't know anything about offshore accounts! I don't even have a passport! Who else had access to my banking information?"
Elena gently untangled Lisa’s fingers from her arm, her mind racing as she pieced together the missing fragments of the puzzle.
"Think, Lisa. Who helped Mark set up your apartment lease? Who handled the corporate filings when you started working at his consulting firm?"
Lisa closed her eyes tightly, trying to sift through the fog of betrayal and panic.
"David," she whispered, her eyes flying open in sudden horror. "David, his chief financial officer. He was always at the office late, reviewing documents that Mark claimed were routine tax audits."
Before Elena could respond, the restaurant’s overhead lights flickered once, twice, and then plunged the entire dining room into sudden, absolute darkness. A collective gasp echoed from the bar area as the emergency backup generators hummed to life, bathing the room in a sickly, pale yellow glow.
At the same moment, the heavy glass front door of the restaurant pushed open, admitting a cold gust of autumn wind and a tall figure in a dark trench coat who immediately stepped out of view behind the frosted glass partition.
Elena stood up instantly, grabbing the black suitcase and sliding the manila envelope across the table into Lisa’s hands.
"We need to leave, right now," Elena said, her voice dropping to an urgent command. "That wasn't a random power failure. The building’s main circuit breaker was just tripped from the utility closet in the basement."
Lisa scrambled out of her chair, clutching the envelope to her chest as her heels clicked frantically against the hardwood floor.
"Where are we going?" Lisa asked, looking back nervously toward the shadowy entrance. "The police officers took our car keys when they escorted Mark out."
Elena didn't hesitate. She grabbed Lisa by the arm and pulled her toward the service exit near the kitchen doors.

"We’re not going to the parking lot," Elena replied, her eyes fixed on the dimly lit hallway ahead. "We’re going down to the service loading dock. David isn't just trying to move money—he’s trying to retrieve the physical ledger hidden inside the lining of this suitcase before the federal marshals impound it."
