Chapter 1 - The Weight of Departure

The low hum of the upscale restaurant’s air conditioning barely masked the suffocating tension hanging over the table. Elena stood rigidly by the edge of the mahogany dining surface, her knuckles white as she gripped the handle of the heavy black suitcase. Her hair was pulled back into a severe, immaculate bun, and her cream-colored top seemed almost ghostly against the warm, amber glow of the dining room lights. Across the table, Mark sat frozen in his dark blue polo shirt, his eyes darting frantically between Elena and Lisa, who was dressed in an emerald-green dress that suddenly felt entirely out of place.

Lisa looked down at the familiar leather tags swinging from the suitcase handle, her chest rising and falling with a shallow, panicked rhythm.

"Bakit nsa kanya ang bag ko?" Lisa asked, her voice trembling slightly as she glanced up at Mark for an explanation he clearly did not have.

Elena let out a sharp, incredulous breath, her eyes burning with a mix of exhaustion and suppressed fury. She reached into her pocket with a trembling hand, retrieving a crumpled stack of luggage tickets and her smartphone, the screen still glowing brightly in the dim restaurant ambiance.

"Lisa, ikaw ang hindi tutuloy bukas," Elena said, her voice cutting through the ambient chatter of the restaurant like a shard of glass. "Mas mabuti kung hindi ka na sumama."

Mark finally found his voice, raising a hand defensively.

"Elena, calm down. Let’s not make a scene here in public. Everything is a misunderstanding."

Elena stepped closer, planting her hands firmly on the table and leaning down so her face was level with Mark’s. The emotional weight in the room thickened until it felt almost impossible to draw a clean breath.

"Sinu-sundo mo na naman siya?" Elena demanded, her voice dropping to a harsh, dangerous whisper that vibrated with months of suspicion finally turning into brutal reality.

Mark opened his mouth to speak, but no words came out. Lisa shrank back into her chair, her face draining of all color as she realized the implications of the documents Elena held in her hand. But before anyone else could react, the screen of Elena's phone lit up with an incoming text notification that made her stop cold.

Elena glanced down at the notification, her breath catching in her throat as she read the single line of preview text visible on the locked screen.

"Read this out loud, Mark," Elena whispered, turning the phone slowly so the glowing display faced him directly. "Go ahead. Tell her what your flight confirmation really says."
