Chapter 4 - The Sound of Sirens

The low hum of the restaurant refrigeration units suddenly felt deafening as the weight of Elena’s words settled over the table. Mark sat paralyzed, his gaze locked onto the glowing screen of the smartphone where the audio file had finished playing. The silence that followed was heavy, broken only by the faint clinking of wine glasses from the bar area across the dining room.
Lisa pressed her trembling fingers to her mouth, tears finally spilling over her lashes and cutting tracks through her makeup.
"You recorded him? You’ve been tracking him this whole time?" Lisa whispered, looking at Elena with a mixture of fear and newfound clarity.
Elena straightened up, adjusting the lapels of her coat with deliberate slowness.
"When you live with someone who treats honesty like a negotiable commodity, Lisa, you learn to keep receipts. I didn't track him out of jealousy. I tracked him because three weeks ago, my signature was forged on a property title, and the only person with access to my corporate seal was sitting across from me every night eating dinner."
Mark swallowed hard, his voice barely a rasp when he finally spoke.
"Elena, please. Let’s not involve the authorities. We can handle this privately. We can divide the remaining funds and go our separate ways quietly without ruining everything we’ve built."
"We didn't build anything, Mark," Elena replied coldly. "You built a house of cards on a foundation of stolen identities and fraudulent loans, and you expected both of us to stand inside it until it collapsed."
Before Mark could formulate another plea, the faint, rising wail of approaching sirens echoed from the street outside. The sound started low, bouncing off the concrete skyscrapers of the financial district, before growing sharp and unmistakable as the emergency vehicles turned onto the block directly outside the restaurant’s floor-to-ceiling glass windows.
Lisa flinched at the sound, her eyes darting toward the street.
"Is that for us?" she asked, her voice cracking with panic.
Elena didn't answer immediately. She walked over to the black suitcase, picked it up with both hands, and set it firmly on the chair beside her, away from both Mark and Lisa.
"Not yet," Elena said evenly. "That’s for the corporate fraud unit. They were scheduled to arrive at your office at eight o'clock tonight, Mark. But when I saw you meeting Lisa here with her packed bags instead of preparing for the audit, I redirected them here."
Mark leaped out of his seat, knocking his chair backward onto the floor with a loud crash that finally broke the polite indifference of the remaining dinner guests. Heads turned in unison as Mark grabbed his coat from the back of the chair, his eyes wild with desperation.
"You called the financial crimes division?" Mark shouted, abandoning all attempts at discretion. "You’ve completely ruined me!"
"No, Mark," a calm, authoritative voice interrupted from behind him.
A tall man in a tailored charcoal suit stepped out from the shadows near the restaurant’s private dining entrance, flashing a gold shield before slipping it back into his jacket pocket.

"Mr. Davis, I’m Detective Vance. Step away from the table, please. We have a few questions about your offshore wire transfers."
