Chapter 5 - Collateral Damage

The restaurant lobby fell into an absolute, breathless hush as Detective Vance stepped fully into the warm light of the dining room. Two uniform officers flanked him discreetly near the exit, blocking any potential path of escape. Mark stood frozen between his chair and the table, his chest heaving as he looked from the detective to Elena, realization dawning that his carefully orchestrated escape plan had been checkmated hours before he even arrived at the restaurant.
"Detective, there’s been a misunderstanding," Mark stammered, raising his hands slightly in a placating gesture. "This is a private family matter. My wife—my soon-to-be ex-wife—is just emotional."
Detective Vance didn't blink. He pulled a folded document from his breast pocket and unfolded it with deliberate slowness.
"Embezzling three million dollars from corporate development funds and laundering it through shell companies registered in fictitious names isn't a family matter, Mr. Davis. That’s federal wire fraud."
Lisa sank back down into her chair, her knees completely failing her. The emerald green of her dress seemed to mock her vibrant appearance, contrasting sharply with the pale, hollow look on her face. She looked at Mark as if seeing a stranger for the very first time.
"You used my name, didn't you?" Lisa whispered, her voice barely audible. "That shell company... the one registered in the Cayman Islands... was my name on those incorporation papers?"
Mark refused to look at her, keeping his eyes stubbornly fixed on the floor.
"Lisa, don't listen to them. They’re twisting things to protect the corporate board."
"Answer me, Mark!" Lisa snapped, slamming her hand against the table with a sudden surge of adrenaline. "Was my name on those papers?"
"Yes," Detective Vance answered for him, stepping closer and placing a heavy hand on Mark’s shoulder. "Her name, her old social security number, and her forged signature on every single corporate resolution. As far as the federal indictment is concerned, Ms. Vance, you are currently listed as the primary beneficial owner of the laundered capital."
Elena watched the scene unfold with a quiet, restrained expression, neither triumphant nor sympathetic. She reached down, picked up the black suitcase by its handle, and hoisted it comfortably onto her shoulder.
"Her flight to Chicago tomorrow is still valid, Detective," Elena said calmly, addressing the officer. "The ticket was purchased with legitimate funds from my personal account. But I suggest you impound that suitcase. It contains the hard drives he tried to wipe before he met us here."
Mark lunged forward, a desperate cry escaping his lips, but the two uniform officers intercepted him instantly, clicking the cold steel cuffs around his wrists with practiced efficiency.
"You planned this," Mark hissed, glaring venomously at Elena as they forced him toward the exit. "You knew about the audit before I did."
Elena paused at the threshold of the restaurant, turning back to look at him one last time.

"I didn't plan your crimes, Mark. I simply stopped covering up for them."
