Chapter 6 - The Aftermath in the Lobby

The heavy oak doors of the restaurant swung shut behind the departing police officers, cutting off the muffled sounds of the street outside. Within seconds, the dining room returned to an eerie, stifling quiet. The few remaining patrons had retreated to the far corners of the room, whispering behind napkins and avoiding eye contact with the table where the drama had just unfolded.
Lisa sat motionless in her emerald dress, staring blankly at the empty chair where Mark had been sitting only moments before. Her coffee cup remained half-full, sending up a tiny, dying wisp of steam into the chilled evening air.
Elena walked slowly back toward the table, setting the black suitcase down near her feet. She pulled out a chair across from Lisa and sat down without being invited.
"You should drink some water," Elena said softly, pushing a fresh glass across the polished wood toward the younger woman.
Lisa didn't touch the glass. Instead, she slowly raised her head, her eyes red-rimmed and filled with a bitter confusion.
"Why didn't you warn me?" Lisa asked, her voice cracking with raw emotion. "If you knew he was embezzling, if you knew he was setting me up as the fall guy for his shell companies, why did you let me walk into this restaurant tonight?"
Elena reached into her bag, pulled out a pristine white handkerchief, and placed it neatly beside Lisa’s trembling hands.
"Because if I had warned you over the phone or sent you a message, Mark would have cleaned out the remaining accounts and been across the border by midnight," Elena replied steadily. "You needed to see the suitcase packed with your own clothes. You needed to hear him lie to your face about the one-way ticket. Only then would you realize that you were never part of his future plan—you were just his escape vehicle."
Lisa shuddered, the brutal truth washing over her in an overwhelming wave. She gripped the edge of the table until her knuckles turned pale.
"He told me we were starting over," Lisa whispered, tears finally streaming down her cheeks unchecked. "He said you were holding him back, that you didn't understand his ambitions."
"He told me the exact same thing about you two years ago," Elena said without a trace of bitterness, her voice remarkably even. "Different name, different city, same script. The only difference is that this time, I made sure the authorities had a paper trail they couldn't ignore."
Lisa looked up sharply, her gaze piercing through the dim restaurant lighting.
"What happens to me now, Elena? The detective said my name is on those incorporation papers. The federal indictment... does that mean I’m going to prison too?"
Elena reached across the table and slid the manila envelope over to Lisa, tapping the corner with her fingernail.
"Not if you sign the affidavit inside that envelope before midnight," Elena said quietly. "It’s a complete deposition detailing how Mark coerced you, forged your signature, and used your identity without your consent. My legal team prepared it three days ago."
Lisa stared at the envelope as if it were a ticking bomb, her breath catching in her throat as she realized the lifeline being offered. But before she could reach out to pick it up, the screen of her own phone lying face down on the table suddenly flashed with an unknown caller ID, followed immediately by an automated text message alert.

Lisa slowly turned her phone over, and the color drained completely from her face as she read the new message.
