Chapter 11 - The Unexpected Call

The bell of the elevator chimed softly as the doors slid open to reveal the bustling lobby of the restaurant, now cordoned off with yellow federal crime scene tape. Several agents in tactical windbreakers stood talking in hushed tones near the host stand, while flashbulbs occasionally flickered from outside as local news crews gathered on the sidewalk.

Detective Vance stepped out of the elevator first, signaling to the senior agent in charge that the evidence had been successfully recovered. Before Elena and Lisa could step past the threshold into the lobby, one of the agents rushed over, holding out a secure satellite phone toward Detective Vance with an urgent expression on his face.

"Sir, you need to take this," the agent said breathlessly. "It’s dispatch from the federal holding facility downtown. The transport van carrying Mark Davis never made it to booking."

Vance’s expression hardened instantly. He snatched the phone from the agent's hand.

"Vance here. Report."

A burst of static crackled from the earpiece before a panicked voice broke through.

"Sir, transport unit four was intercepted three blocks from the precinct. A black SUV forced the van off the road near the financial district overpass. The driver is unconscious, and the prisoner is gone."

Elena froze in her tracks, her hand gripping Lisa’s arm tightly.

"What happened?" Lisa whispered, seeing the sudden shift in Detective Vance’s posture. "Was Mark rescued?"

Vance lowered the phone slowly, his eyes dark with professional frustration.

"Mark didn't escape on his own," Vance muttered, looking directly at Elena. "Miller’s secondary cell just hit our transport unit. They didn't just want the suitcase ledger back—they needed Mark alive because he’s the only one who memorized the decryption keys for the primary offshore servers."

Elena let out a sharp, incredulous breath.

"So all of this—the arrest, the recovery of the suitcase, the federal raid—was just the opening act? They planned for him to be intercepted from the beginning?"

"Not necessarily planned, but they had a contingency," Vance replied, already barking orders into his radio for an immediate citywide grid search and roadblock implementation. "Miller’s organization doesn't leave loose ends, but they also don't let millions of dollars vanish without a fight. And right now, Mark is the only person who knows where the remaining capital is buried."

Lisa gripped the manila envelope in her hands until the paper began to crumple.

"If Mark is still out there, and Miller’s men have him... does that mean we’re still in danger?"

Before Vance could answer, the restaurant’s landline phone behind the reception desk began to ring insistently. The remaining civilian employees had all been evacuated, leaving the phone to echo through the empty lobby in a jarring, rhythmic sequence.

Vance motioned for his team to secure the perimeter, then walked over to the desk and picked up the receiver on speakerphone.

"Federal Bureau of Investigation. Identify yourself."

A familiar, breathless voice crackled through the speaker, making Elena and Lisa both gasp in unison. It wasn't Miller, and it wasn't an anonymous kidnapper.

It was Mark.
