Chapter 2 - The Digital Alibi

The restaurant seemed to hold its collective breath as the harsh blue light of the smartphone illuminated Mark’s guilt-ridden face. He stared at the screen as if it were venomous, refusing to reach out and touch it. The text notification preview was clear enough for anyone nearby to read, flashing the name of an airline and a seat assignment that directly contradicted every single lie Mark had spent the past three weeks constructing.

"I said, read it," Elena repeated, her voice dangerously calm, terrifyingly steady. "Tell Lisa who is actually sitting in seat 14B on tomorrow morning’s flight to Chicago. Because according to these boarding passes I printed from your laptop while you were in the shower, it certainly isn't you and me."

Lisa stood up abruptly, knocking her cloth napkin onto the hardwood floor. Her eyes darted from Elena’s tear-rimmed eyes to Mark’s slumped shoulders.

"Mark, what is she talking about?" Lisa demanded, her voice rising above the polite murmur of the surrounding diners. "You told me her ticket was canceled weeks ago. You swore to me that you were handling the separation legally and cleanly."

Mark finally looked up, his jaw tight.

"Keep your voice down, Lisa. This isn't the place for this."

"No, we are going to talk about it right here, right now," Elena interjected, slamming the black suitcase down against the floor with a heavy thud that drew the immediate attention of the floor manager near the entrance. "You packed her clothes, Mark. You brought her luggage to our favorite restaurant while pretending you were taking me out for a farewell dinner before our relocation. What kind of sick game are you playing?"

Mark rubbed his temples, looking profoundly cornered.

"It’s not a game, Elena. Things got complicated. You don't know the whole story."

"Then enlighten me," Elena challenged, stepping back and folding her arms across her chest. "Tell me how Lisa’s winter wardrobe ended up packed inside the suitcase I bought for our anniversary trip."

Before Mark could formulate a defense, Lisa reached across the table and snatched the luggage tickets from Elena’s loose grip. Her eyes scanned the printed barcodes, her expression shifting from confusion to profound betrayal.

"These tickets... these aren't round trip," Lisa murmured, her voice barely audible over the clatter of silverware from a nearby table. "Mark, you booked a one-way ticket for me. But you told me we were moving together."

Elena watched Lisa’s reaction with a cold, unforgiving scrutiny.

"He’s not moving with either of us," Elena said softly, stepping in for the final emotional blow. "He’s staying right here, and he bought himself a ticket to a completely different city under a name neither of us knows."
