Chapter 3 - Unraveling the Web

The revelation hung in the air like smoke from a smothered fire. Lisa dropped the luggage tickets back onto the table as if they burned her fingers, her chest heaving as the carefully constructed illusion of her relationship with Mark fractured completely. She looked down at the man she had trusted, seeing not a protector, but a coward trapped in his own web of lies.
"Is that true, Mark?" Lisa asked, her voice cracking with a vulnerability that completely dismantled her earlier composure. "Are you running away?"
Mark shook his head, though the gesture lacked any real conviction.
"It’s not like that. I had to secure things first. You both know how volatile my business ventures have been lately. If I didn't separate the assets and the travel arrangements, everything would have collapsed."
"Don't talk to me about assets," Elena snapped, her patience finally evaporating completely. She reached into her coat pocket and pulled out a folded manila envelope, slamming it onto the table directly on top of Mark’s untouched dinner plate. "You haven't been talking about business for six months. You’ve been liquidating our joint accounts to fund an apartment lease in a city three states away—an apartment you leased in Lisa's name without her knowledge, using forged employment verification."
Lisa gasped, grabbing the edge of the table to steady herself.
"An apartment in my name? Mark, what are you talking about? I live across town in my own place."
"Not anymore, you don't," Elena said bitterly. "Your landlord served an eviction notice this morning because your lease was terminated and transferred without your signature. Check your email, Lisa. He’s been systematically dismantling both of our lives while sitting at our kitchen tables pretending everything was fine."
Mark slammed his fist onto the table, causing the water glasses to vibrate.
"Enough! Both of you, just stop!" Mark hissed, his face flushing a deep, angry crimson. "You think you have me figured out, Elena? You think you’re the martyr in this tragedy? You checked out of this marriage two years ago. I just had the courage to make it official."
Elena didn't flinch. Instead, a chillingly calm smile touched the corners of her mouth, though her eyes remained entirely devoid of warmth.
"You didn't make it official, Mark. You made it criminal."
She pulled her phone back up and tapped the screen twice, placing it face up on the table next to the manila envelope. A recorded phone call began to play at low volume, featuring Mark’s voice clearly discussing offshore account transfers and fake identity documents with an unknown third party.
The color drained entirely from Mark’s face as the audio filled the quiet space between them.
"Where did you get that?" Mark whispered, his voice trembling as he stared at the glowing phone.
Elena leaned down, her lips brushing against his ear as she delivered the final warning.

"From the dashcam in the car you thought you parked safely three blocks away. And by the way, the police are already reviewing the rest of the footage."
