Chapter 10 - The Ultimate Betrayal

The cold concrete walls of the subterranean hallway seemed to close in even further as Detective Vance’s words settled over the two women. Lisa froze mid-breath, her hands dropping slowly away from her face as the horrifying reality of what Mark had planned for her finally crystallised. It wasn't just financial ruin or an elaborate relocation scam. It was a setup designed to end with her disappearance on a one-way flight to a foreign country from which she would never return.
"A life insurance policy?" Lisa whispered, her voice barely audible above the hum of the ventilation fans. "He... he was going to kill me?"
"Or ensure you took the fall for a crime so severe you’d spend the rest of your life in a maximum-security prison while he collected the payout under a pseudonym," Vance clarified, his voice softening slightly with professional sympathy. "Miller’s network specializes in identity erasure. Once you landed in Chicago tomorrow, you wouldn't have existed on paper anymore."
Elena stared down at the black suitcase, the heavy leather handles suddenly feeling like physical manifestations of the danger they had just narrowly escaped. She reached down, unzipped the main compartment, and pulled out a stack of folded documents tucked securely beneath the lining.
"Is this what you were looking for, Detective?" Elena asked, holding up a thick sheaf of notarized identity transfers and international bank codes.
Vance stepped closer, taking the documents and inspecting them with a practiced eye.
"Yes. These are the master routing keys for every offshore account Miller and Mark operated. With these, we can freeze the remaining assets before they hit the overseas clearinghouses."
He looked up from the papers, studying Elena with a look of profound respect.
"You risked a lot tonight, Mrs. Davis. Most people in your position would have run the other way the moment they discovered the affair."
"I didn't do it for Mark, and I certainly didn't do it for revenge," Elena replied steadily, slipping her hands into her coat pockets. "I did it because nobody gets to rewrite my life or use my name to destroy someone else's future."
She turned her gaze toward Lisa, who was still trembling against the concrete wall, clutching the manila envelope as if it were her only lifeline in the world. Elena walked over, placed a steadying hand on Lisa’s shoulder, and helped her stand up.
"We need to go upstairs, Lisa. The federal agents are waiting to take your official deposition, and then this nightmare will finally be over."
Lisa nodded slowly, wiping away the last remaining tears from her cheeks.
"Thank you, Elena. After everything Mark and I... after everything I put you through by being blind to his lies... I don't deserve your help."
"Nobody deserves to be treated like collateral damage," Elena said softly. "Now let's go finish this."

They walked side by side down the corridor toward the elevators, leaving the damp subterranean gloom behind them as they ascended back toward the well-lit lobby of the restaurant. But as the elevator doors slid open to the ground floor, a new group of federal agents stood waiting by the reception desk, accompanied by an urgent phone call that changed the trajectory of the entire investigation.
