Chapter 12 - The Desperate Bargain

The tinty, distorted sound of Mark’s voice filled the quiet lobby, cutting through the hum of the federal radio equipment like a razor.
"Elena? Are you still there? Please, you have to listen to me—they’re going to kill me if you don't help," Mark’s voice pleaded, frantic and completely stripped of the arrogant composure he had worn earlier in the evening.
Detective Vance immediately signaled an agent to trace the call, while holding up a cautionary hand to keep Elena and Lisa from speaking.
"Mr. Davis, state your location," Vance commanded into the receiver, keeping his tone authoritative and ice-cold.
"I’m not talking to you, Detective! Put Elena on the phone!" Mark shouted back, the sound of rushing wind and screeching tires audible in the background indicating he was moving at high speed inside a vehicle. "Elena, please! They think I gave you the master keys. If you don't bring the suitcase to the old warehouse district by the harbor in twenty minutes, they’re going to drop me off the pier!"
Elena stepped forward, pushing past Detective Vance and grabbing the receiver from the desk herself.
"You brought this on yourself, Mark," Elena said, her voice entirely devoid of pity. "You spent two years building a prison out of lies, and now you’re surprised you finally got locked inside."
"Elena, I swear to God, I never wanted to hurt you!" Mark sobbed, the sound of a sharp slap echoing through the phone line followed by a muffled grunt of pain. A deeper, gruffer voice briefly took over the line before hanging up abruptly with a sharp click.
The dial tone hummed monotonously through the speakerphone.
The traced location indicator on the laptop of a federal agent nearby flashed red and then went dark.
"The signal bounced through three different satellite relays before it dropped," the agent reported, looking up with a frustrated shake of his head. "We can't get an exact fix, but the audio profile matched the industrial corridor near Pier 42."
Vance slammed his hand down on the reception desk.
"He’s right. That district has been abandoned for urban renewal projects for three years. It’s a maze of empty warehouses and dark alleys."
Lisa turned to Elena, her eyes wide with a terrifying mix of fear and moral confusion.
"Elena... we can't just let them kill him. Despite everything he did, despite the lies and the setup... he’s still a human being."
Elena looked down at the black suitcase sitting near her feet, then up at Detective Vance.
"They aren't going to kill him for the suitcase," Elena said calmly, her analytical mind cutting straight through the panic. "They’re going to kill him because once the feds have the decryption keys from the ledger, Mark is a liability. Miller’s men don't leave witnesses who can identify their entire international network."
Vance nodded grimly.
"She’s right. If we move in with a full tactical team, they’ll execute him before we breach the perimeter. We need a different approach."
Elena looked down at her watch, then reached out and picked up the black suitcase once again, her expression hardening into a look of absolute determination.

"Then we don't send in a tactical team," Elena said quietly. "We send in the person they’re expecting to meet."
