Chapter 13 - The Bait at Pier 42

The fog rolled heavily off the dark, churning waters of the harbor, wrapping the abandoned warehouses of Pier 42 in a thick, ghostly shroud. The rusted metal skeleton of an old crane loomed overhead like a prehistoric beast against the pale moonlight. A single black SUV sat parked near the edge of the concrete pier, its engine idling with a low, rumbling vibration that echoed across the empty docks.
Elena stepped out of Detective Vance’s unmarked sedan, carrying the black suitcase with both hands. Her cream-colored top and dark trousers blended into the foggy gloom, making her almost invisible against the industrial backdrop. Behind her, a hundred yards back in the shadows of a container stack, Vance and his tactical unit maintained silent, invisible surveillance through high-powered night-vision optics.
"Remember," Vance’s voice crackled quietly through the tiny earpiece hidden in Elena’s ear. "Keep the suitcase between you and them. Do not step past the red container. We have sharpshooters locked on the driver's side door."
Elena didn't reply aloud, simply adjusting her grip on the heavy leather handle as she walked slowly toward the idling SUV. The crunch of gravel beneath her shoes was the only sound cutting through the damp night air.
The passenger-side door of the SUV swung open, and two men in dark coats dragged a disheveled, bruised Mark out onto the cold concrete. Mark stumbled forward, his hands still bound behind his back with plastic zip-ties, his dark blue polo shirt stained with dirt and dried blood.
"Elena!" Mark cried out, coughing violently as one of the men shoved him toward the center of the pier. "Did you bring it? Do you have the ledger?"
A tall figure stepped out from the shadows near the back of the SUV, holding a silenced pistol loosely at his side. It was Miller’s second-in-command, the scarred man from the subterranean hallway.
"Put the bag down, Mrs. Davis," the man called out, his voice smooth and cold as the harbor wind. "Slide it across the pavement toward the rear tire. Nice and slow."
Elena stopped ten feet away, planting her feet firmly on the concrete. She looked at Mark, then back at the armed man, her expression entirely devoid of fear.
"You don't want the suitcase," Elena said clearly, her voice carrying across the open pier. "You want the decryption keys to the offshore servers. But those keys aren't written on paper inside this bag."
The scarred man narrowed his eyes, stopping halfway toward her.
"What are you talking about?"
"The keys are encrypted inside a multi-factor authentication protocol that requires my biometric authorization every twelve hours," Elena lied smoothly, her heart pounding against her ribs while her exterior remained like polished stone. "If you kill Mark, or if you don't let us walk away right now, the entire server network auto-destructs and locks your accounts permanently."
The man stared at her for a long, agonizing moment, weighing the risk. Then a cruel smile touched his lips as he raised the silenced pistol, pointing it directly at Mark’s forehead.

"I guess we’ll find out if you're bluffing," the man whispered.
