Chapter 9

The celebration of their legal freedom was short-lived. Two nights after Harrison Brooks delivered the signed custody decrees, the estate’s sophisticated security grid flared to life. In the subterranean monitoring room, Marco stood over bank of glowing monitors alongside Luca, watching thermal imaging feeds display three unauthorized figures scaling the western stone perimeter wall. They weren't casual intruders; they moved with military precision, dressed in dark tactical gear, carrying suppressed sidearms. These were professional clean-up crew members hired by Vincent Rossi, desperate to reclaim their lost leverage before Julian Vance’s financial collapse completely ruined their syndicate’s balance sheets.

Upstairs in the east nursery, Elena was rocking her baby to sleep when a low, rhythmic series of muffled thuds echoed from the lower grounds—not gunshots yet, but the unmistakable sound of kinetic breaches. Her heart leaped into her throat. Instinct screamed at her to hide, but the paralyzing fear of her past life had been replaced by the fierce, protective instincts of a mother who had fought too hard for her freedom. She locked the nursery door, pushed a heavy antique dresser against the panels, and gathered her child into her arms, holding the blue-and-white striped blanket tight against her chest.

Downstairs, the estate transformed into a ghost-town battleground. Luca walked through the dimly lit hallway with terrifying calm, his long black coat left in his study as he moved unhindered in his black turtleneck. He didn't panic; he orchestrated. Two of his guards intercepted the intruders near the rose garden, neutralizing the threat with silent, practiced efficiency before any glass could shatter near the main living quarters. But Marco jogged up to Luca with a grim expression, holding a recovered encrypted phone.

“Boss, Rossi isn't just sending hitmen anymore,” Marco reported swiftly, his voice urgent. “Vance is with them. He gave them the estate’s blueprint layout in exchange for a cut of the syndicate’s escape funds. Julian is outside the gates right now, screaming for his wife.”

Luca’s expression darkened into a chilling mask of pure wrath. The rules of engagement had shifted. Julian Vance had crossed the line from a pathetic, desperate debtor into a direct, active threat to the sanctuary Luca had sworn to protect. “Bring Julian inside,” Luca commanded, his voice dropping an octave into a tone of absolute authority. “Not at the gate. Bring him straight to the central courtyard. It’s time to settle every debt permanently.”
