Chapter 4

Morning light filtered through the heavy velvet drapes of the estate, casting long, geometric patterns across the Persian rug in the grand study. Elena sat across from Luca at a massive oak desk, her fingers wrapped tightly around a cup of black coffee. She had dressed in a simple cream-colored knit sweater and dark trousers provided by Mrs. Gable, looking vastly different from the terrified woman in the hospital gown, though the purple bruise on her cheek remained a stark brand of her survival. Spread across the desk were financial statements, legal affidavits, and a series of high-resolution photographs showing Julian meeting with notorious loan sharks in dimly lit parking garages.
“This is what he’s been hiding,” Luca stated, tapping a finger against a bank statement showing a six-figure deficit. “Julian hasn't been a legitimate broker in over two years. When his investments collapsed, he started borrowing from the syndicate—specifically, a faction operating out of the eastern docks. When they demanded repayment, he offered collateral he didn't legally own: you, and by extension, the child.”
Elena stared at the photographs, feeling a cold numbness wash over her. She had suspected financial trouble, had endured the sudden mood swings and the frantic late-night phone calls, but she had never imagined the sheer depth of Julian’s depravity. He hadn't just been losing money; he had been trading their lives like chips at a poker table. “He told me we were moving to a new house next month,” she whispered, her voice trembling slightly. “He showed me brochures of coastal villas. It was all a lie to keep me compliant until the baby was born.”
“Pathological liars rarely stop inventing stories until reality violently intercepts them,” Luca said, his tone devoid of pity, filled instead with cold, analytical certainty. He leaned back in his leather chair, studying her reaction. “Which brings us to the present. Julian’s creditors believe the baby is the ultimate leverage to force him to pay up. They don't care about Julian; they care about the leverage. As long as you and the child are untethered, you remain prime targets.”
“Then what do we do?” Elena asked, her spine straightening as a surge of maternal fierce resolve overrode her fear. She had fled the hospital to protect her child, and she wasn't about to become a passive passenger in this new war. “I won't run forever, Luca. I refuse to live looking over my shoulder.”

“We don't run,” Luca replied, a dangerous, sharp edge entering his voice for the first time. “We draw a line. We utilize Julian’s own corruption to legally sever every tie he has to you. My legal team has already filed an emergency protective order based on domestic violence and verified financial endangerment. Once the courts see the paper trail, Julian’s parental rights will be systematically dismantled before he even has time to hire a defense attorney.”
Elena exhaled slowly, feeling the first genuine glimmer of hope since the hospital corridor. She looked at the man across the desk—a criminal mastermind by trade, yet her only shield against the wreckage of her past.
