Chapter 2

The heavy oak doors of Luca Moretti’s secluded estate swung open silently, revealing an interior that defied the cold, industrial aesthetic Elena had half-expected from a man of his dangerous reputation. The foyer was warm, lit by cascading amber wall sconces and dominated by sweeping mahogany staircases. Luca stepped inside first, shedding his long black leather trench coat to reveal the pristine black turtleneck underneath. He turned back, offering a steady hand to help Elena navigate the elevated stone threshold. She hesitated for a fraction of a second, clutching the blue-and-white striped blanket where her sleeping baby rested securely, before placing her small, trembling hand in his. His grip was warm, firm, and completely devoid of the erratic tension she had lived with for years under Julian’s roof.

An older woman with kind, lined eyes and an immaculate silver bun stepped forward from the hallway. This was Mrs. Gable, the estate’s longtime housekeeper and the one person outside of Luca’s inner circle who knew the full extent of his complex world. Mrs. Gable took in Elena’s bruised cheek, the oversized hospital gown, and the fragile infant with profound professional empathy, asking no intrusive questions. Instead, she immediately reached for a plush cashmere shawl, gently draping it over Elena’s shivering shoulders. Luca watched the exchange with a quiet approval, his posture relaxing fractionally as he realized his home was functioning as the sanctuary he had promised it would be.

“The east nursery has been prepared,” Mrs. Gable said softly, her voice carrying a comforting cadence that finally allowed Elena’s shoulders to drop an inch. “Warm water is ready, and there are clothes suitable for a mother and child who have traveled light.”

Elena looked up at Luca, the weight of her dependence pressing heavily on her chest. She had spent the last three years shrinking herself to avoid triggering Julian’s explosive outbursts, conditioned to believe she was helpless without him. Now, she was standing in the fortress of a stranger who had violently disrupted a hospital corridor on her behalf. “Why?” Elena asked, her voice cracking slightly from disuse. “Why risk your standing, your safety, for us?”

Luca walked over to a heavy mahogany sideboard, pouring two glasses of sparkling water, though he kept one untouched for himself. He turned slowly, leaning against the wood. “Julian Vance crossed a line that even men in our world respect,” Luca replied evenly, his voice dropping an octave. “No child belongs in the crossfire of a desperate, failing coward. But more importantly, Elena, you share a history with someone who owes me a debt. Protecting you is simply setting the ledger straight.”
