Chapter 10

The crisp autumn air in the central stone courtyard was charged with static electricity and impending violence. Floodlights blazed from the upper cornices, illuminating the manicured boxwood hedges and casting harsh shadows across the paving stones. Julian Vance was shoved roughly into the center of the courtyard by two of Luca’s guards, stumbling against the cold stone. His expensive bright blue suit—the same suit he had worn in the hospital corridor—was rumpled, stained with dirt, and reeking of cheap whiskey and unmitigated panic. His eyes were wide, bloodshot, and feral as he scanned the looming architecture of the estate.

Heavy footfalls echoed across the flagstones. Luca stepped out from the arched colonnade, walking with deliberate, unhurried grace. He wasn't carrying a weapon visible in his hands, but the sheer presence he projected commanded absolute submission. Marco flanked him, keeping a watchful eye on the perimeter while two guards held Julian securely by the arms.

“Where is she?” Julian shrieked, his voice cracking with hysteric desperation as he tried to lunge forward. “That’s my wife! That’s my child! You have no right, Moretti! You’re just a common criminal hiding behind fancy walls!”

Luca stopped a few feet away, looking down at Julian with profound, freezing disgust. “You forfeited every right you ever possessed the moment you raised your fist against a woman in a hospital gown,” Luca said, his voice carrying clearly across the silent courtyard. “And you signed your own death warrant the moment you sold your family’s location to Rossi’s syndicate for pocket change.”

“I’m desperate!” Julian sobbed, his bravado instantly collapsing into pathetic whimpering as he dropped to his knees on the cold stones. “They were going to kill me, Luca! I had no choice!”

“You always had a choice, Julian,” Luca replied coldly. “You chose cowardice. You chose greed. And now, you face the mathematics of your own decisions.”

From the second-story balcony overlooking the courtyard, Elena stood quietly in the shadows. She wore her warm cashmere shawl, holding her baby securely against her chest. She looked down at the man who had terrorized her for years—not with fear, but with a profound, healing indifference. Julian was no longer a monster holding a leash; he was a pathetic, broken shell of a man destroyed entirely by his own vices. She watched as Luca gave a subtle nod to Marco. There would be no bloodshed tonight, no brutal vengeance that would stain the sanctuary; instead, federal marshals, tipped off by Luca’s legal team with incontrovertible evidence of Julian’s multi-million-dollar financial crimes, stepped out from the shadows of the colonnade, slapping heavy steel handcuffs onto Julian’s wrists and dragging him away into the waiting night.
