Chapter 14

The sun dipped below the horizon, casting brilliant strokes of violet and orange across the western sky as Luca’s vehicle turned up the long, tree-lined drive leading back to the estate. The heavy iron gates parted automatically, welcoming them home. Inside the vehicle, the baby had fallen fast asleep against Elena’s chest, breathing softly and securely within the folds of the blue-and-white striped blanket. Elena looked out the window, watching the familiar stone architecture of the manor emerge through the dusk, feeling a profound sense of belonging that she had never experienced anywhere else in her life.

When the car parked in the grand circular driveway, Luca stepped out first, opening her door with practiced grace and offering a steady hand to help her step down onto the gravel. He took the diaper bag over his shoulder while Elena carefully carried the sleeping infant toward the heavy oak front doors. Mrs. Gable was waiting in the warm foyer, her face lighting up with a maternal smile as she greeted them, gently taking the baby to settle her into the east nursery for the night.

Left alone in the grand hallway under the amber glow of the wall sconces, Elena and Luca stood facing each other. The quiet of the estate wrapped around them like a protective blanket. The legal battles were over; the syndicate threats had been permanently neutralized; Julian Vance was locked away behind federal prison walls. There were no longer any external storms threatening to breach their doors.

“You’ve given us everything, Luca,” Elena said quietly, stepping closer to him, her hands resting softly against the lapels of his dark suit jacket. “Our safety, our freedom, our peace. How do I ever begin to repay a debt like that?”

Luca caught her hands in his, bringing them up to press a gentle, lingering kiss against her knuckles. He looked down at her, his dark eyes shining with deep, enduring affection. “You don't owe me a debt, Elena. In our world, ledgers are balanced with blood and currency. But what we have built here cannot be measured on a balance sheet.”

He reached into his inner jacket pocket and pulled out a small, simple velvet box. He didn't drop to one knee—that theatricality belonged to a different life, a different man. Instead, he simply opened the box to reveal a delicate platinum band set with a single, brilliant diamond that caught the amber light.

“Stay with me, Elena,” Luca said, his voice steady, rich, and filled with a lifetime of quiet devotion. “Not as a guest in a sanctuary, not as a chapter in a ledger, but as my equal, my partner, my wife. Build this forever with me.”

Elena felt tears of pure joy welling in her eyes, free of any fear or hesitation. She nodded, her voice thick with emotion. “Yes, Luca. Forever.”
