Chapter 7

The aftermath of Rossi’s visit hung heavily over the estate like an impending storm. Elena found Luca standing on the rear veranda, looking out over the manicured gardens as the rain finally tapered off into a heavy mist. She stepped out through the glass sliding doors, the cool damp air catching in her hair. She walked up beside him, keeping a respectful distance, her eyes fixed on the distant stone wall marking the property line.

“You didn't have to face him alone on my account,” Elena said quietly, breaking the silence.

Luca didn't look at her immediately. He kept his gaze fixed on the horizon, his hands resting on the wrought-iron railing. “Rossi isn't a man who negotiates; he’s a opportunist who tests boundaries,” Luca said evenly. “If I hadn't met him at the gate, he would have assumed weakness. In my world, showing hesitation is an invitation for destruction.”

“And what about your world?” Elena turned to face him fully, the wind catching her sweater. “How long can I live here before your associates decide I’m a liability? How long before the violence you keep at bay spills over these walls and reaches my child?”

Luca finally turned his head, his dark eyes meeting hers with unflinching intensity. “Do you regret coming with me, Elena? Would you rather have stayed in that hospital hallway while Julian ripped your child from your arms?”

“No!” Elena answered instantly, her voice rising with sudden, fierce emotion. “Never. I would die before letting Julian touch my baby again. But I am not blind, Luca. I see the men standing guard outside. I hear the whispers in the corridors. I know what you do for a living. I just... I need to know that my child won't grow up surrounded by shadows.”

Luca stepped closer, closing the distance between them until she could feel the heat radiating from his frame. His expression softened, the hard edges of the underworld enforcer melting away to reveal the man who had promised her safety in the hospital. “When I signed that paperwork, Elena, I made a vow to myself as much as to you,” Luca said, his voice dropping to a low, intimate register. “Every violent act I commit is designed to ensure that the people behind these walls never have to know what violence looks like. I am the shadow so you can live in the light.”

Elena stared up at him, her chest aching with a complex cocktail of fear, gratitude, and a sudden, terrifying flicker of attraction. She had spent years tied to a man who used fear as a weapon; here was a man who wielded absolute power solely as a shield. She reached out, her fingers brushing lightly against the fabric of his sleeve, anchoring herself to the only steady truth in her shattered world.
