Chapter 1

The institutional hum of Saint Jude Memorial Hospital’s postpartum ward provided a sterile soundtrack to Elena Vance’s internal terror. Her bare feet felt the cold linoleum through thin hospital socks, grounding her in a reality she desperately wished was a nightmare. Just moments earlier, Julian Vance, the man who had vowed to protect her, had lunged forward with manic desperation, his tailored bright blue suit flashing under the harsh fluorescent lights like a warning flare. He had screamed that he was taking the baby, his fingers clawing violently at the soft blue-and-white striped blanket cradling the newborn. Elena had clutched the infant tighter to her chest, her bruised cheek throbbing in rhythm with her panicked heartbeat, acutely aware of the fading purple discoloration where Julian’s fist had landed the night before.

Then came the blur of motion. Julian was no longer towering over her; he was flat on his back, gasping for air against the polished floor tiles. Standing casually over him was a towering figure in a heavy black leather trench coat, his slicked-back undercut catching the overhead lights and a stark dark tattoo creeping up his muscular neck. This was Luca Moretti. He moved with terrifying, effortless precision, having dispatched Julian with a single, brutal kick before the nurse holding the discharge clipboard could even blink. Elena stared in wide-eyed shock, her breath hitching in her throat as Luca smoothly transitioned from enforcer to protector.

He turned his attention to the trembling nurse, taking the clipboard with steady hands. Elena watched anxiously from the background, her arms aching from the tension. With a sleek fountain pen, Luca signed his name as the father on the hospital paperwork, rewriting their fates with every deliberate stroke of black ink. He finished, handed the clipboard back to the wide-eyed nurse, and turned to face Elena directly. His sharp, imposing features softened remarkably. Looking down at her gently, a soft, reassuring smile touched his lips. In a low, resonant voice that cut cleanly through the ringing in her ears, he spoke the words that anchored her swirling world: “I am Luca Moretti. You’re safe now.”

Elena let out a ragged breath she felt she had been holding for months. She knew the name. In the sprawling, shadowy underworld of the city, Luca Moretti was a legend—a man feared by corporate criminals and street syndicates alike. Yet, as she looked into his steady, dark eyes, she saw no malice, only an unwavering anchor. Julian groaned from the floor, clutching his stomach, but Luca ignored him entirely, gesturing for the nurse to lead the way down the private elevator. Elena clutched her baby closer, realizing that while her old life had just been violently shattered, the jagged pieces were being gathered by a man who intended to build an impenetrable fortress around her and her child.
