Chapter 5

The heavy mahogany doors of the study muffled the quiet ticking of the grandfather clock in the hallway. Days bled into one another within the insulated walls of Luca’s estate, a strange bubble of peace suspended in the middle of a gathering storm. Elena spent her hours between the nursery, where her baby cooed happily at hanging mobiles, and the expansive kitchen, where Mrs. Gable patiently taught her the comforting rituals of baking bread. For the first time in years, Elena’s hands were busy creating rather than bracing for impact. Yet, the estate was not merely a domestic haven; it was a high-security nerve center. Men in dark suits moved quietly through the corridors, communicating in low tones via encrypted earpieces, maintaining a perimeter that ensured no uninvited guest could ever breach the grounds.

On the fourth evening, Elena found herself walking down the western corridor, drawn by the faint sound of raised voices echoing from Luca’s private library. She didn't intend to eavesdrop, but as she approached the slightly ajar door, her own name caught her attention.

“She’s a civilian, boss,” a gruff voice—belonging to Marco, Luca’s primary enforcer—spoke sharply. “Keeping her and the kid here puts a target on the entire estate. Vance’s creditors are getting desperate. They’re sniffing around the financial district trying to trace your legal filings.”

Luca’s voice responded, low, measured, and absolute. “Let them sniff. They find what I want them to find. Elena stays until the family court judge signs the final decree terminating Julian’s rights. End of discussion.”

“And after that?” Marco pressed. “You planning on playing house? That’s not how the syndicate operates, Luca. Word gets out that Luca Moretti is harboring a woman and child, and every rival faction will view it as a weakness to exploit.”

“Let them test that theory,” Luca replied, the air in the room dropping several degrees in perceived temperature. “Anyone who looks at this house with malice doesn't leave it with breath. Make sure the eastern perimeter is reinforced. I want double patrols starting tonight.”

Elena stepped back from the door, her heart hammering against her ribs. The reality of her situation crashed back over her with suffocating weight. She wasn't just a guest enjoying hospitality; she was a geopolitical pawn in a silent war between underworld factions, and Luca Moretti was standing directly in the line of fire for her sake. She retreated silently to her room, the warmth of the baking lessons evaporating as she realized the high cost of her safety. She sat on the edge of the bed, staring down at her sleeping baby, torn between profound gratitude for Luca’s fierce protection and deep guilt for dragging a dangerous man into an even more dangerous entanglement.
