Chapter 12

Seasons shifted across the estate, painting the sprawling gardens in vibrant hues of amber, gold, and deep emerald. The high-security perimeter remained vigilant, but the atmosphere within the walls had transformed from a tense wartime bunker into a genuine, vibrant home. Elena had settled into the rhythm of daily life with a grace that amazed even Mrs. Gable. She spent her afternoons in the sunlit conservatory, tending to delicate orchids and teaching her growing baby the first tentative steps across plush Persian rugs. The lingering trauma of her past life had faded into a distant memory, replaced by the deep, resonant safety of a household built on mutual respect and unwavering protection.
Luca remained the steadfast anchor of the estate. Despite his dangerous underworld obligations, he made it a strict rule to be present every evening for dinner, sitting across from Elena at the long mahogany dining table, sharing quiet conversations about art, literature, and the simple joys of watching a child grow. The contrast between his lethal reputation in the city and his gentle, attentive demeanor at home was a daily reminder of the complex man who had rewritten her destiny.
One crisp afternoon, Elena found Luca in the estate’s extensive private library, examining a rare leather-bound manuscript. She walked in carrying a small tray with two cups of freshly brewed coffee, setting them down on the mahogany desk before leaning against the edge.
“Mrs. Gable says the autumn harvest festival in the village is happening this weekend,” Elena said casually, watching his reaction. “She thinks it might be nice to take the baby into town for a few hours.”
Luca looked up from the manuscript, his dark eyes narrowing slightly in protective calculation. “Town can still be unpredictable, Elena. Rossi’s faction has been quiet, but—”
“I’m not asking for permission, Luca,” Elena interrupted gently, a playful, confident spark lighting up her eyes. She reached out, resting her hand over his on the wooden desk. “I’m inviting you. With your security detail flanking us, and with you walking beside us, I think the village is quite safe for a mother and her child. Besides, it’s time I stopped hiding behind these walls, and started living in the world you fought so hard to secure for me.”

Luca stared at her hand on his, then slowly looked up into her steady, fearless gaze. A slow, genuine smile spread across his face—a rare expression that transformed his hard features into something remarkably warm. He turned his hand over, interlacing his fingers tightly with hers.
“Then we go together,” Luca said quietly, his voice rich with unspoken devotion. “Every step of the way.”
