Chapter 3

The east nursery was a sanctuary of muted creams and soft lavenders, entirely divorced from the violent reality that had birthed their journey. Elena sat in a deep velvet rocking chair, watching the steady, shallow rise and fall of her baby’s chest. The infant was finally sleeping deeply, freed from the ambient stress that had saturated the womb during Elena’s harrowing final months with Julian. Yet, sleep eluded Elena. The bruised skin on her cheek throbbed whenever she turned her head too quickly, serving as a visceral reminder of why she could never return to the life she had known. Her mind raced back to Julian’s desperate, feral expression in the hospital corridor. He wasn't just a controlling husband; he was a desperate man drowning in massive gambling debts and illegal business entanglements, using the baby as leverage to secure a lifeline he didn't deserve.

A soft knock on the nursery door pulled her from her reverie. Luca pushed the door open just enough to signal his presence, standing in the hallway with his sleeves rolled up to his forearms, revealing taut, corded muscles and faded ink markings. He held a small ceramic mug of steaming chamomile tea. He didn't enter the room uninvited, maintaining a respectful boundary that immediately eased the hyper-vigilance gripping Elena’s nervous system.

“You haven’t slept,” Luca observed quietly, his dark eyes scanning her face, lingering for a fraction of a second on the purple bruise.

“How can I?” Elena whispered, keeping her voice low so as not to disturb the baby. “Julian knows where we were born. He knows the hospital. What happens when he realizes the discharge paperwork signed by a known associate of the underworld isn't something the police will just ignore?”

Luca stepped inside, moving with a silent, feline grace, and placed the mug on the antique side table near the rocking chair. “Julian won't be calling the police, Elena. To involve the authorities, he would have to explain the millions of dollars he embezzled from his own firm—money that happens to belong to people who don't utilize the court system for dispute resolution. He is currently licking his wounds and calculating how to flee the city before his creditors catch up to him. You are safe under this roof.”

Elena looked up at him, studying the planes of his face. There was an intense stillness to Luca Moretti, the posture of a predator who had no need to roar because his reputation preceded him. “You speak of these things so casually,” she murmured. “Violence, crime, debt. Are you different from him, Luca? Or am I simply trading one cage for another, albeit with a more comfortable chair?”

Luca held her gaze, unflinching. A rare, shadowed melancholy flickered across his features before settling back into stoic resolve. “A cage locks you in to protect the owner,” Luca said softly. “A sanctuary locks the outside world out to protect what is inside. Decide which one this is when you are ready.”
