Thirty minutes later, the social worker emerged. Her stern expression had softened considerably.
""Ms. Hayes,"" the woman said, sighing as she capped her pen. ""The system is deeply flawed, and sometimes it allows malicious people to use it as a weapon. Your daughter is thriving. She told me about the garden, about how you read to her every night, and about how safe she feels here.""
The woman handed Sarah a formal paper. ""I am closing this investigation as unfounded. Furthermore, I am flagging the complainant. You won't be bothered by our office again.""

When the door closed, Lily ran into the foyer and buried her face in Sarah’s lap. ""I told her you're the best mommy,"" Lily mumbled into the fabric.
