Chapter 8: The Anonymous Tip
Chloe made good on her threat. Three days later, a sharp knock echoed through the house. Sarah opened the door to find a stern-faced woman holding a clipboard.
""Ms. Hayes? I’m from the Department of Child and Family Services. We received an anonymous tip regarding the welfare of a minor in your care. Allegations state you are physically incapable of providing a safe environment.""

Sarah felt the air leave her lungs, but she forced the door open wider. ""Please, come in. You have nothing to hide here.""
The inspection was humiliating. The social worker checked the pantry, inspected the safety rails in the bathroom, and scrutinized Sarah’s medical files. Finally, she sat down to interview Lily alone. Sarah waited in the hallway, her fingernails biting into her palms. If Chloe managed to take Lily away, Sarah knew she wouldn't survive it.
