The small, affluent town they lived in thrived on gossip. Chloe, before her fall from grace, had seeded venomous rumors among the local socialites. When Sarah took Lily to the local grocery store for the first time, she felt the heavy gaze of the community.
Women in designer clothes whispered behind hands as Sarah navigated the aisles, struggling slightly to reach a box of cereal on a higher shelf.
""Look at her,"" a woman murmured loudly enough to be heard. ""It’s a tragedy, really. Keeping that poor orphan child when she can barely take care of herself.""

Before Sarah could react, Lily stepped forward. The shy, trembling girl from the hospital was gone. Lily looked up at the whispering woman, her brow furrowed. ""My mommy is taking great care of me. And she doesn't whisper mean things about strangers.""
The woman’s face flushed bright red as she hurried away. Sarah looked at her daughter, pride swelling in her chest so fiercely it brought tears to her eyes. They were healing each other.
