Chapter 4: Shadows of the Past

Peace is rarely unbroken. Across town, Chloe was out on bail, stewing in a cheap motel room. Stripped of her luxury and facing prison time for financial fraud, her anger festered into obsession. She couldn't accept that a ""cripple"" and a ""stray,"" as she cruelly called them, had bested her.
Chloe began a campaign of quiet harassment. Anonymous calls to the house in the dead of night. Black sedans parked ominously at the end of their long driveway.
Sarah noticed, but she refused to show fear. When the phone rang at 2:00 AM, she simply unplugged it. When the car sat at the gate, she wheeled herself onto the front porch, turned on all the floodlights, and stared the vehicle down until it drove away. She was done being the victim. She had a daughter to protect, and she would not let the shadows of Chloe’s malice touch Lily’s newfound sunlight.
