Chapter 11: The Courtroom

The courthouse was imposing, all cold marble and echoing halls. Chloe sat at the defense table, looking haggard but defiant, glaring daggers at Sarah.
When Sarah took the stand, she didn't focus on the wheelchair. She didn't ask for pity. She spoke with clinical, devastating clarity about Chloe’s actions.
Chloe’s defense attorney tried to rattle her. ""Isn't it true, Ms. Hayes, that your condition makes you dependent on outside help? That you cannot adequately protect a child?""

""My condition,"" Sarah said, her voice ringing clear across the silent courtroom, ""requires me to use a chair. It does not compromise my intellect, my financial stability, or my capacity to love and protect my daughter. The only danger to my child in this room is the woman sitting next to you.""
The judge, a no-nonsense woman in her sixties, peered over her glasses, clearly moved by Sarah’s unshakeable composure.
