Chapter 1: The Rain Clears

The cold rain continued to mist the concrete as the black police SUV pulled away, its red and blue lights reflecting in the puddles. The sirens faded into the gray afternoon, taking Chloe—the woman who had terrorized them for months—away from the hospital grounds.

Sarah sat in her wheelchair, her chest heaving with a mixture of exhaustion and profound relief. She looked down at six-year-old Lily, whose small hands were still wrapped in a death grip around her stuffed gray bunny. Lily’s face was buried in Sarah’s beige cardigan, her small shoulders trembling.

""She's gone, sweetie,"" Sarah whispered, her voice rough but steady. She wrapped her arm tighter around the little girl. ""She's never going to hurt us again.""

Miriam, the older woman and Sarah’s long-time family attorney, stepped forward, her dark blue coat shielding her from the drizzle. ""The eviction is absolute, Sarah. Chloe's embezzlement of your parents' estate and her fraudulent attempts to declare you an unfit mother are in the hands of the district attorney now. The house is yours. Lily is yours.""

Sarah closed her eyes, letting the drops of rain mix with her tears. The accident that had taken her mobility six months ago had almost cost her everything. Chloe, her entitled step-sister, had tried to use the wheelchair as proof of incompetence, attempting to throw Lily back into the foster system to secure the family trust. But she had failed. Love had won the first battle.
