Chapter 13: The Sun Breaks Through

Life after the trial possessed a sweetness they had never known. The shadows were gone.
Months passed, turning into a golden autumn. Sarah’s physical therapy yielded miraculous, if small, results. One afternoon in the living room, with her therapist guiding her, Sarah locked the braces on her legs, gripped the parallel bars, and pulled herself up.
She stood.
Her legs shook violently, and sweat beaded on her forehead, but she was standing. Lily, sitting on the sofa with her gray bunny, gasped.
""Mommy!"" Lily cheered, jumping up and clapping her hands.

Sarah looked at her daughter from a standing height for the first time in over a year. A tear slipped down her cheek, but she was smiling so hard her face ached. ""I'm doing it, Lily. I'm doing it.""
It wasn't a cure. She would always need the chair. But it was a victory of the spirit, a testament to the unyielding will that had carried them both through the darkness.
