Chapter 9 - Into the Dark

The sudden plunge into total darkness triggered immediate chaos across the grand ballroom. Shouting filled the void as heavy boots scrambled across the marble floor, the sharp metallic clicks of weapon safeties being disengaged echoing ominously through the cavernous space. Evelyn stumbled in the dark, her foot catching on the hem of her skirt before Aidan’s strong hand grabbed her arm and pulled her flat against the base of a marble pillar.
“Stay down,” Aidan whispered fiercely right next to her ear, his breathing heavy and controlled. “Director Vance has emergency backup frequencies. The entire building’s power grid has been remotely severed.”
A series of muted thuds and sharp gasps echoed through the room, followed by the heavy sound of bodies hitting the floor. Emergency red backup lights flickered on overhead, casting a dull, crimson glow over the carnage. Director Vance and her tactical operatives had vanished into the shadows, leaving behind two unconscious federal marshals sprawled near the mahogany console.
Evelyn struggled to catch her breath, her bruised face throbbing as the adrenaline began to wear off, leaving a deep, bone-deep exhaustion in its wake. “She lied about Switzerland,” Evelyn whispered, her voice trembling uncontrollably. “If Lily was never there, where are they taking her?”
Aidan knelt beside her, pulling a small tactical flashlight from his beige trousers and clicking it on to reveal a narrow beam of white light. “Look at the security console,” he urged, pointing the beam toward the wall.
The main computer screen, powered by an independent backup battery, was still glowing faintly in the dim red light. A single file had been force-downloaded to the desktop during the blackout. The file name read: Project_Aegis_Phase_Two.
Evelyn crawled forward across the marble floor, her knees aching as she reached the console and tapped the trackpad. The file opened instantly, revealing a digital blueprint of an underground research and transit facility located directly beneath the city’s historic harbor district—the very district where Matthew’s corporate empire had laundered millions through fake shipping manifests.
“That’s where they’re keeping her,” Evelyn said, her eyes scanning the structural schematics until she spotted a restricted holding sector marked with Lily’s biometric tracking ID. “There’s a private freight tunnel connecting this ballroom directly to the harbor docks.”
Aidan looked at the blueprint, his sharp jawline tightening as he calculated the risks. “If we take that tunnel, we’re walking straight into Director Vance’s primary installation without backup, without weapons, and without federal protection.”
“I don't care,” Evelyn said fiercely, standing up with sudden, unyielding strength. She pulled the torn remnants of her knit cardigan tighter around her shoulders. “They took my daughter. I’m going to get her back or burn their entire empire to the ground.”
Aidan stared at her for a long moment, seeing a fierce, protective mother where a broken, kneeling woman had been just an hour ago. He slowly pulled his car keys and a master security badge from his pocket, handing the badge to Evelyn.
“Then we move fast,” Aidan said, clicking his flashlight off as a distant heavy metallic door began to groan open down the dark service corridor.

As they slipped behind the velvet curtain and descended into the damp, echoing freight tunnel beneath the ballroom, a loud explosion rocked the luxury hotel far above them, cutting off all remaining power and plunging the entire city block into absolute silence.
