Chapter 12 - The Oxygen Crisis

The red emergency lights pulsed furiously inside the stalled transit car, casting an ominous crimson glow over the glass walls and the dark tunnel outside. The sudden halt had sent Aidan crashing hard against the metal partition, leaving him momentarily dazed as he struggled back to his feet. Evelyn slammed her fists against the locked glass doors, but the vehicle was completely immobilized in the middle of the subterranean tube.
“The jammer triggered their automated counter-protocol,” Aidan gasped, pressing a hand against his ribs where he had taken the brunt of the impact. “They’ve locked down the life support systems in the entire lower level to flush us out with toxic nitrogen gas.”
Evelyn didn't hesitate. She whipped the encrypted jammer out of her skirt pocket, dropped to her knees beneath the main control console, and tore open the primary wiring access panel with her bare fingers, ignoring the sharp edges of the metal slicing into her skin.
“Where is the manual override port?” Evelyn demanded, her voice tight with panic as a soft, rhythmic hiss began to emit from the ceiling vents, signaling the release of the suffocating gas.
“Second port from the left, beneath the yellow fuse!” Aidan yelled, coughing as the first faint wisps of the odorless, invisible gas began to fill the confined cabin.
Evelyn jammed the override cable into the designated port just as her vision began to blur at the edges. A sharp, piercing alarm shrieked through the car, followed by a mechanical click as the vehicle’s primary logic board rebooted under the jammer’s forced feedback loop.
With a violent lurch, the transit car roared back to life, shooting forward down the dark tunnel at maximum speed just as the cabin air grew perilously thin. Evelyn collapsed back against the seat, gasping for fresh oxygen as her lungs burned from the momentary exposure.
“We’re approaching the main holding sector,” Aidan said, pointing ahead through the front windshield where a massive steel bulkhead door bearing the corporate logo of the Swiss holding company loomed out of the darkness.
The transit car didn't slow down. Instead, the onboard safety system, corrupted by the jammer, plowed straight through the security barrier with a deafening crash of shattered glass and twisted steel, sending the vehicle skidding across a vast, industrial reception floor before slamming to a dead stop against a concrete pillar.
Evelyn kicked open the ruined door of the transit car and tumbled out onto the floor, ignoring the sharp pain in her bruised limbs. She looked up to find herself standing in the very heart of Director Vance’s underground nerve center.
Rows of towering computer servers lined the cavernous room, blinking with endless streams of financial data and live surveillance feeds. And standing in the center of the room, calmly waiting for them beside an open glass elevator shaft, was Director Vance herself.
“I must hand it to you, Evelyn,” Director Vance said smoothly, her voice echoing off the concrete walls as she adjusted the cuffs of her charcoal pantsuit. “You have far more resilience than Matthew ever gave you credit for. Unfortunately, your stubbornness ends here.”

Before Evelyn could charge forward, two armed operatives stepped out from behind a server rack, their weapons raised and trained directly on Aidan and Evelyn.
