Chapter 7 - Tactical Breach

The heavy oak doors shattered inward as the tactical team poured into the grand ballroom, their assault rifles raised and laser sights painting a web of glowing red dots across the marble floor. Shouting echoed off the vaulted ceilings as federal marshals in black ballistic vests commanded everyone to drop to their knees and place their hands behind their heads.

Director Vance didn't flinch, nor did she raise her hands. Instead, she calmly slid the manila folder back into her briefcase while three armed operatives in civilian tactical gear moved swiftly to form a protective human wall around her.

“Stand down!” the lead federal marshal roared, his weapon aimed squarely at Director Vance’s chest. “Drop your weapons and identify yourselves immediately!”

“We are federal intelligence oversight,” Director Vance stated coolly, flashing a metallic badge that gleamed under the crystal chandelier. “This entire operation is classified under national security directive twelve-B. Stand down, Marshal, or you will face immediate dishonorable discharge and federal detention.”

The marshal hesitated, his finger trembling slightly against the trigger as he glanced between Director Vance’s high-level clearance credentials and the local arrest warrants they had just executed on Matthew and Serena.

Aidan moved quickly, stepping into the marshal’s line of sight while keeping his hands clearly visible. “Don't listen to her, Marshal! She’s running an unauthorized offshore slush fund. Her operatives just hacked the safe house where Evelyn’s daughter is being held!”

Director Vance’s eyes flashed with sudden, dangerous annoyance as she glared at Aidan. “You are drastically overstepping your bounds, counselor. Your career was supposed to end quietly in a corporate boardroom, not in a federal standoff.”

Evelyn watched the chaos unfold around her, the red laser dots dancing across the cream-colored knit of her cardigan. The realization hit her with sickening clarity: the domestic police, the federal marshals, and the international oversight committee were all playing a high-stakes game of chess, and Lily was the pawn they were willing to sacrifice to win the board.

“Enough!” Evelyn screamed, her voice cutting through the shouting and the hum of tactical gear with such raw, desperate force that every single person in the room froze.

The silence that followed was absolute. Evelyn slowly stepped past the federal marshal and walked right up to Director Vance, her bruised face illuminated by the harsh glow of the tactical flashlights.

“You want the shares?” Evelyn asked, her voice dropping into a terrifyingly calm whisper. “You want the corporate control and the forged confessions?”

Director Vance tilted her head, watching her with predatory curiosity. “I do.”

“Then give me the encrypted satellite phone right now,” Evelyn demanded, holding out her trembling hand. “Let me speak to my daughter for thirty seconds. If I hear her voice, and she tells me she’s breathing, I’ll sign whatever papers you put in front of me.”

Director Vance hesitated for a fraction of a second, then reached into her briefcase and pulled out a heavy, secure satellite device, pressing it into Evelyn’s palm.

Evelyn pressed the receiver to her ear, listening to the dial tone click over. A small, familiar voice answered on the other end, but the background noise made Evelyn’s blood run completely cold.
