Chapter 4 - Shadows Closing In

The heavy scent of ozone and expensive perfume hung thickly in the air as the federal agents closed the distance across the marble floor. Matthew’s hand remained frozen inside his jacket, his fingers grazing the corner of the forged passport that could secure him a one-way ticket out of the country before the federal freeze hit his accounts. Serena stood paralyzed in her white satin gown, her eyes darting frantically toward the floor-to-ceiling windows that overlooked the city skyline far below.

“Don't do it, Matthew,” the lead agent warned, resting his hand casually on the holster at his hip. “The building is surrounded. Every exit, garage, and rooftop access point is locked down by federal marshals.”

Aidan stepped away from Evelyn, his posture remaining completely calm as he addressed the agents. “The primary digital evidence, including the encrypted financial ledgers and the eyewitness deposition regarding the cover-up, has already been uploaded to the Department of Justice secure server. You’ll find the access tokens on the console in the executive suite upstairs.”

Serena whipped her head around to glare at Aidan, betrayal flashing across her features. “You Judas,” she hissed, her voice trembling with rage. “We funded your entire political campaign. We put you on the board of directors.”

“And you used my ambition to launder dirty money through real estate trusts,” Aidan replied smoothly, his voice completely devoid of emotion as he looked down at her. “I simply decided I preferred a clear conscience and a federal witness protection package over sharing a prison cell with you.”

Matthew slowly withdrew his empty hand from his jacket, realizing the trap was entirely shut. As the steel handcuffs snapped around his wrists with a sharp, metallic click, his eyes fixed on Evelyn with a look of pure, unadulterated venom.

“You think you’ve won, Evelyn,” Matthew whispered as the agents pulled him toward the heavy oak doors. “You think a dead man’s secrets can protect you. But you have no idea who is actually pulling the strings behind this merger.”

Evelyn watched him pass without flinching, though the bruised skin on her cheek throbbed with a dull, persistent ache. “Whoever is pulling the strings,” she replied quietly, “they’re going down with you.”

As the heavy oak doors slammed shut behind the departing agents and prisoners, an unnatural silence fell over the grand ballroom, leaving only Evelyn, Aidan, and the lingering echoes of deceit.

Aidan walked over to the mahogany console near the wall, picked up a discarded bar card, and slid it into his pocket before turning to Evelyn.

“We need to leave now,” Aidan said urgently. “Matthew’s silent partner hasn't made a move yet, and they know about Lily.”
