Chapter 14 - The Final Ascent

The service elevator climbed upward with a smooth, silent motion, carrying Evelyn and Aidan past tier after tier of blinking server racks and subterranean corridors as the digital countdown timer flashed a glaring red 03:45 above the door. The low, ominous rumble of the facility’s self-destruct charges detonating in the lower levels vibrated through the steel cables, shaking the small elevator car with increasing violence.

“Hold onto the railing!” Aidan shouted, bracing his feet against the floor as the car jolted sideways from a nearby explosion.

Evelyn gripped the metal handrail so hard her knuckles turned stark white, her bruised face pale and tense as she stared at the floor indicator lights creeping slowly toward number three. Every second felt like an eternity, the weight of the past six years pressing down on her chest with suffocating force.

“She lied about the third floor,” Evelyn whispered, her voice laced with sudden, cold realization as she watched the cable system map on the maintenance display panel. “Look at the data routing. The observation deck isn't on three. It’s on the roof.”

Aidan looked at the display, his sharp jawline tightening instantly. “Director Vance rerouted the lift car to the incinerator sub-basement. She rigged the override controls the moment we stepped inside.”

Before Aidan could reach the manual emergency brake lever on the ceiling panel, the elevator car violently lurched downward, its descent shifting from a smooth climb into a rapid, terrifying freefall as the primary cables snapped overhead.

Evelyn screamed as the floor dropped out from beneath them, the sudden weightlessness throwing them both against the reinforced ceiling before the emergency brake jaws finally caught the side rails with a deafening screech of grinding metal and sparks.

The elevator shuddered to a violent halt, wedged firmly between the second and third levels, filled with acrid smoke and the smell of burning insulation.

“Are you okay?” Aidan asked frantically, coughing as he pulled himself up from the floor and checked Evelyn for injuries.

“I’m fine,” Evelyn gasped, brushing the debris from her torn knit skirt. She looked up at the emergency hatch in the ceiling of the elevator car. “We have to go up.”

Using his multi-tool, Aidan forced the ceiling hatch open with a sharp wrench, shoving the heavy metal panel aside to reveal a narrow maintenance shaft leading directly up toward the surface vents.

Pushing through the smoke and heat, Evelyn scrambled up into the dark shaft first, using her hands and feet to climb the vertical ladder as the heat from the lower levels began to rise like a furnace. Aidan followed closely behind, guarding her back as distant alarms wailed through the collapsing structure.

They reached the top hatch, shoved it open with a joint heave of strength, and tumbled out onto the open-air rooftop helipad just as the night wind hit their faces.

Standing right in the center of the helipad, waiting calmly beside a idling private helicopter with Lily safely bundled in a heavy jacket inside the cabin, was Director Vance.

As Director Vance turned to face them, her hand hovering over a secondary detonator, Evelyn stepped forward, her blue eyes locked onto the woman who had terrorized her family, and pulled a small, active satellite broadcast recorder from her pocket—streaming every word directly to the federal attorney general’s secure server.
