Chapter 6 - The Uninvited Guest

The elevator doors slid open with a soft, mechanical hiss, revealing a woman in a sharp charcoal pantsuit with her dark hair pulled back into a severe bun. She stood motionless inside the small car, holding a thick manila folder labeled with Lily’s full name in neat, handwritten cursive. The fluorescent light from the elevator car cast a stark glow over her unsmiling face, creating an immediate barrier of cold authority between her and the sprawling luxury of the ballroom.
Evelyn froze mid-stride, her hand hovering just inches from the cold steel handle. Aidan instinctively stepped up beside her, his hand moving subtly toward his jacket pocket where a legal multi-tool rested.
“You must be Evelyn,” the woman said, her voice smooth and devoid of any local accent, carrying the precise cadence of someone accustomed to absolute obedience. “And Mr. Vance’s former legal counsel, I presume. I am Director Vance. No relation to Serena, I assure you.”
Evelyn’s eyes narrowed as she absorbed the name. “Director of what? The federal bureau doesn't have a Director Vance on the organizational chart.”
“Because I don't work for domestic law enforcement,” the woman replied calmly, stepping out of the elevator and onto the marble floor. Her heels clicked sharply against the stone with every deliberate step. “I represent the international oversight committee that actually financed the corporate merger Matthew and Serena were so desperately trying to protect.”
Aidan stepped forward, placing himself slightly in front of Evelyn. “If you represent the oversight committee, then you already know Matthew is in federal custody and the accounts are frozen. Your operation here is finished.”
Director Vance offered a chilling, humorless smile, her sharp eyes shifting past Aidan to lock directly onto Evelyn. “Matthew and Serena were merely tools, Mr. Vance—useful instruments to manage the domestic assets while the real business was conducted offshore. But tools break, and when they do, they must be replaced or discarded.”
Evelyn felt a cold chill run down her spine. The casual way Director Vance spoke of human beings as disposable objects confirmed every paranoid fear Evelyn had harbored during her marriage.
“Where is my daughter?” Evelyn demanded, her voice cutting through the cavernous silence of the ballroom with sharp, unyielding clarity. “What have you done with Lily?”
Director Vance lifted the manila folder slightly, her expression remaining entirely unchanged. “Your daughter is currently being relocated to a secure facility in the Swiss Alps. She is safe, provided you cooperate fully with our final directive.”
“Cooperate how?” Evelyn asked, her fists clenched tightly at her sides as she fought down the urge to scream.
“By signing over your remaining voting shares in the holding company to our Swiss entity, and recording a video statement confessing to the financial embezzlement Matthew was originally charged with,” Director Vance stated matter-of-factly. “Do that, and you will be permitted to board a private flight to Geneva to join her tomorrow morning. Refuse, and the safe house feed goes dark permanently.”

Before Evelyn could process the impossible ultimatum, the ballroom doors blew open with a deafening crash, and heavily armed men in tactical gear swarmed the room.
