Chapter 13 - Checkmate

The cold barrels of the assault rifles gleamed under the harsh fluorescent lights of the subterranean server room, casting an inescapable shadow over Evelyn and Aidan as they stood amidst the wreckage of the crashed transit car. Director Vance stood calm and composed by the open glass elevator shaft, her hands folded neatly in front of her as if she were waiting for a routine business presentation to begin.

“Put your weapons down!” Aidan shouted, stepping instinctively in front of Evelyn while keeping his hands raised in clear view of the operatives. “You’ve already triggered every federal backup alarm in the city. The moment you pull those triggers, this entire facility will be swarmed by federal marshals.”

Director Vance offered a chilling, dismissive smile. “Let them come, Mr. Vance. By the time the federal marshals crack the outer bulkhead doors, this entire underground facility will be permanently sealed, and every digital record linking our committee to the corporate merger will have been scrubbed clean by our automated fire suppression protocols.”

Evelyn stepped out from behind Aidan, her blue eyes blazing with a fierce, unwavering fury that completely ignored the weapons pointed at her chest. “Where is my daughter?” she demanded, her voice echoing off the towering server racks with razor-sharp intensity.

Director Vance gestured slightly toward the open glass elevator behind her. “She is waiting on the upper observation deck, completely unharmed. All you have to do to see her is sign the final asset transfer documents loaded onto the terminal beside you.”

Evelyn glanced over at the sleek mahogany desk near the server racks, where a single digital tablet displayed a blindingly bright legal document requiring her biometric thumbprint and electronic signature to surrender her controlling shares in the holding company.

“Don't do it, Evelyn,” Aidan warned quietly, his eyes darting frantically around the room as he calculated the distance between himself and the nearest armed operative. “Once you sign those shares over, we have no legal leverage left. They’ll eliminate us and bury the truth forever.”

Evelyn looked at the tablet, then up at Director Vance, whose finger hovered casually over a small remote detonator clipped to her belt loop—the manual switch for the facility’s explosive self-destruct sequence.

“If I sign, you let Lily walk out of here with Aidan right now,” Evelyn stated, her voice trembling slightly as she placed her hand on the edge of the desk.

“You are in no position to negotiate terms, Evelyn,” Director Vance replied coldly, stepping closer to the edge of the glass elevator. “Sign the document, or watch the elevator descend into the incinerator level instead.”

Evelyn took a deep, steadying breath, pressed her thumb firmly against the glass screen of the tablet, and watched the digital signature flash green as the transfer completed.

Director Vance smiled, pulling a heavy brass key card from her pocket and tossing it across the floor toward Aidan. “Take the service elevator. She’s on the third floor.”

As Aidan caught the key card and pulled Evelyn toward the service lift, Director Vance pressed the remote detonator, and the massive steel doors of the main exit slammed shut, locking them inside as the countdown timer began to tick down from five minutes.
