Chapter 8 - The Voice on the Line

The static hissed softly against Evelyn’s ear as she clutched the heavy satellite phone with both hands. The grand ballroom around her had gone deathly quiet, the tactical marshals and Director Vance’s operatives frozen in a tense stalemate under the blinding glare of the crystal chandelier.

“Mom?” Lily’s small voice finally broke through the electronic hum, sounding tired and confused. “Why are there so many people in the house? A man in a green coat said we have to go on an airplane tonight.”

Evelyn’s breath caught in her throat, tears stinging the corners of her eyes as she fought desperately to keep her voice steady. “Lily, baby, listen to me very carefully. Are you hurt? Did anyone touch you?”

“No, but they took my blue dress and my favorite cardigan,” Lily whispered, a slight tremor of fear creeping into her innocent tone. “And there’s a big gray helicopter landing in the backyard right now—”

Before Lily could finish her sentence, a loud, heavy crash echoed through the receiver, followed immediately by the sound of splintering wood and a sharp, metallic shriek that sounded like a reinforced door being breached.

“Lily! Lily, what’s happening?!” Evelyn screamed into the phone, terror gripping her heart with icy talons.

A sharp, unfamiliar male voice barked an order in German through the open line, followed by the terrifying sound of a scuffle, a muffled cry from Lily, and then the sickening tone of a dead connection as the call was abruptly terminated.

“Lily!” Evelyn shrieked, slamming the satellite phone against the marble floor with all her might, shattering the screen into a thousand glittering pieces.

Director Vance’s expression darkened instantly. “That was a tactical error, Evelyn. The Swiss extraction team was securing her from an unauthorized domestic threat.”

“You lied!” Evelyn lunged forward, her fingers clawing toward Director Vance’s throat, but Aidan caught her by the waist and pulled her back just in time as two tactical operatives raised their assault rifles.

“Calm down, Evelyn! Fighting them here won't bring her back!” Aidan yelled over the commotion, his own face pale with shock as he realized the situation had escalated beyond anyone’s control.

The lead federal marshal stepped forward, his weapon now aimed squarely at Director Vance and her men. “Nobody moves! Drop your weapons! This is a federal crime scene, and you are all under arrest for kidnapping a minor!”

Director Vance didn't panic. Instead, she slowly reached inside her charcoal pantsuit jacket and pulled out a small, encrypted key fob, pressing the central red button with deliberate slowness.

“You have no jurisdiction here, Marshal,” Director Vance said with an icy, mocking smile. “And as for the child, she was never in Switzerland.”

As the key fob signal transmitted, every single overhead light in the luxury ballroom flickered, buzzed violently, and then plunged into absolute, pitch-black darkness.
