Chapter 11 - The Trap Springs

The heavy steel security shutters slammed down into the concrete floor with a deafening, thunderous crash, sealing off the tunnel entrance and cutting off any hope of retreat. The bright, sterile fluorescent lights overhead hummed loudly, casting a clinical, unblinking glare over the pristine white-tiled transit platform.

Aidan spun around, slamming his fist against the solid steel barrier behind them, but it didn't budge an inch. “They knew we were coming,” Aidan said, his sharp jawline tightening as he turned back to face the station. “This entire route was a honey pot designed to flush us out of the hotel and trap us in a controlled environment.”

Evelyn stood frozen in the center of the platform, her bruised face pale under the harsh overhead lighting. She looked up at the automated security cameras tracking their every movement with mechanical precision. The computerized voice echoed again through the hidden speakers, cold and emotionless: Subject Evelyn Sterling and Associate Aidan Vance. Proceed to boarding gate zero-four immediately. Resistance will result in immediate termination of the hostage.

“They have Lily right through that door,” Evelyn whispered, pointing a trembling finger toward a reinforced glass bulkhead at the far end of the platform where a sleek, high-speed transit car idled on the tracks.

“It’s a trap, Evelyn,” Aidan warned, grabbing her arm gently to stop her from walking forward. “If we step onto that transit car, we’re walking directly into Director Vance’s interrogation suite.”

“Do you think I have a choice?” Evelyn snapped, pulling her arm away with a sudden, fierce intensity that caught Aidan completely off guard. “Every second we stand here arguing, they are moving her deeper into this facility. I will trade my life for hers without a single second of hesitation.”

Aidan looked deep into her blue eyes, seeing the absolute, unbreakable resolve of a mother who had nothing left to lose. He slowly let out a long breath, his expression shifting from caution to grim determination.

“Then we don't go as prisoners,” Aidan said, reaching into the waistband of his beige trousers and pulling out a small, heavy black object he had managed to salvage from the federal evidence bag upstairs—a military-grade encrypted jammer.

He tossed it to Evelyn, who caught it deftly in her palm. “What is this?”

“Director Vance relies on local wireless relays to control the facility's automated defense grid,” Aidan explained quickly, tapping his watch. “If you plug this into the data port inside the transit car just as we depart, it will loop the security cameras and blind their central monitoring system for exactly three minutes. That’s our only window to reach the holding sector.”

Evelyn nodded, tucking the jammer securely into the pocket of her torn knit skirt. Together, they walked across the pristine tile platform and approached the sleek glass doors of the transit car.

As they stepped inside, the doors slid shut behind them with a soft hiss, and the vehicle lurched forward smoothly, accelerating down the dark subterranean track into the heart of the facility.

The digital display above the front window counted down rapidly as they sped through the concrete tunnels: Two minutes to sector zero-four.

Suddenly, the transit car violently screeched to a halt in the middle of the dark tunnel, throwing Evelyn and Aidan hard against the front partition. The interior emergency lights flashed a warning red, and a heavy, synthetic voice boomed through the intercom: Override detected. Purging life support in sector zero-four.
