Chapter 1 - The Echo of a Fall

The crystal chandelier above the grand ballroom refracted the harsh overhead light into a million blinding splinters, casting jagged shadows across the polished white marble floor. Evelyn knelt there, her knees pressing hard against the cold stone, the raw sting of Matthew’s open hand burning fiercely across her bruised left cheek. The pale blonde hair fell in disarray around her face, partially obscuring the cream-colored knit cardigan and skirt she had worn to what was supposed to be a night of corporate celebration. A soft, breathless “No…” escaped her lips, trembling slightly as she fought against the sudden wave of nausea that threatened to pull her under.
Aidan stepped forward from the shadows of the mahogany pillar, his tall frame clad in a pristine white button-down shirt and beige trousers, his sharp jawline tight with controlled fury.
“You never hit a witness in public, Matthew,” Aidan said, his voice a low, dangerous growl that cut through the cavernous silence of the empty hall.
Matthew adjusted his black tie with unnerving precision, his tailored black suit immaculate despite the violence he had just committed.
“She was holding the divorce papers, Aidan,” Matthew snapped back, his eyes narrowing as he glared down at Evelyn. “She was about to hand them directly to Serena. You know as well as I do that everything we built depends on keeping this family facade intact until the merger clears tomorrow morning.”
Serena glided into the center of the light, the white satin evening gown with its high slit whispering against the marble floor. Her long dark hair swayed with practiced elegance, though her expression remained completely devoid of warmth.
“Let her speak, Matthew,” Serena commanded coldly, looking down at Evelyn with a mixture of pity and utter contempt. “Or are you afraid of what she found in the bar cards and business records inside that leather folio?”
Evelyn slowly raised her head, her bruised face pale under the fluorescent glare. She reached into her pocket with trembling fingers and pulled out a small, active smartphone, its screen illuminating her face with a harsh blue light.
“I didn’t just find financial fraud, Matthew,” Evelyn whispered, her voice steadying as she looked directly into his eyes. “I found the police report from the night Lily’s real father died.”

Matthew lunged forward instantly, his hand grabbing the phone right as the screen flashed an incoming audio file marked with Lily's name.
