Chapter 3 - The Weight of Silence

The mention of social services acted like a physical blow, causing Matthew to release his grip on Evelyn’s cardigan so fast she staggered backward against Aidan’s chest. Aidan caught her gently by the elbow, his touch firm and steadying, offering a silent anchor in the middle of the storm. Serena stepped closer, her white satin gown rustling softly as she stared at the microcassette tape resting in Matthew’s trembling hand.

“Where is Lily?” Serena demanded, her voice losing its polished composure and dropping into a sharp, desperate register. “If you’ve involved her in this mess, I swear to God—”

“You’ll what?” Evelyn interrupted, her tone devoid of fear as she straightened her skirt with shaking hands. “Have me arrested? Frame me for another crime you didn't commit? You've had six years to practice destroying my life, Serena. But tonight, the game is over.”

Matthew stared at the tape, his mind racing as he calculated the catastrophic damage this would inflict on the upcoming merger with the international conglomerate. If the board of directors discovered that the chief financial officer was tied to a suppressed vehicular homicide investigation involving a minor, the stock would plummet overnight, and federal investigators would freeze all corporate accounts.

“We can make a deal,” Matthew said smoothly, his voice dropping into a conciliatory tone as he tried to mask the desperation bleeding through his words. “Keep the house, keep the cars, take half the offshore accounts. Just hand over the master recording and tell us where the child is.”

Aidan let out a short, cold laugh that lacked any humor. “You still don't get it, Matthew. Evelyn doesn't want your money. She wants your freedom.”

Serena turned her gaze toward Aidan, her dark eyes narrowing with sudden realization. “This was your plan all along, wasn't it? You helped her smuggle the files out of the legal department while pretending to represent the firm during the merger negotiations. You’re working with the federal prosecutor.”

Before Aidan could answer, the heavy oak doors at the far end of the grand ballroom swung open with a loud, echoing bang. Two men in dark suits stepped into the room, their badges gleaming under the crystal lights.

“Matthew Sterling and Serena Vance,” the lead agent announced, holding out a pair of gleaming steel handcuffs. “You are under arrest for corporate fraud, obstruction of justice, and conspiracy in the 2018 hit-and-run death of David Vance.”

Matthew instinctively reached for his breast pocket, his fingers brushing against a hidden passport, while Serena stared in absolute horror at the approaching federal officers.
