Chapter 9 - The Elevator Trap

The elevator doors slid open with a smooth, frictionless hiss, revealing an empty, dimly lit interior lined with mirrored walls. But resting on the floor in the exact center of the car was a small, ticking package wrapped in brown butcher paper and tied with coarse twine—with a digital LED countdown timer glowing a bright, angry red.

00:45... 00:44... 00:43...

Detective Miller froze, his hand stopping inches from the flash drive in Clara's palm. "Back off! Everyone, move back right now!" Miller roared, pushing Graham and Clara toward the far wall behind the concrete dumpster.

"Is that...?" Clara whispered, her eyes widening in sheer terror as she stared at the glowing red numbers ticking down relentlessly in the mirror's reflection.

"C-4 military-grade explosive," Miller confirmed, his face draining of all color as he unclipped his radio with one hand while drawing his weapon with the other. "Dispatch, we have an active explosive device in the subterranean parking level of the Grandview Hotel! Evacuate the upper floors immediately!"

Graham didn't hesitate. He looked past the ticking bomb toward the hallway leading back up to the hotel kitchen where little Chloe was still sitting alone in the velvet chair. The thought of his three-year-old daughter trapped upstairs while a bomb ticked away downstairs sent a surge of pure, primal adrenaline through his veins that completely overrode his sense of self-preservation.

"Chloe!" Graham shouted, bolting past Miller toward the stairwell door.

"Mr. Vance, wait! It's too dangerous!" Miller yelled, but Graham was already taking the concrete steps three at a time, his polished dress shoes slipping against the steps as he hauled himself upward with desperate strength.

The air in the stairwell grew hot and stale as he pushed open the heavy service door leading back into the banquet hall corridor. The ballroom doors were wide open, the crystal dust still hanging heavy in the air like a ghostly shroud. Graham raced across the ruined floor, his eyes scanning the velvet chair where he had left his daughter just minutes ago.

The chair was empty.

The frosted cupcake lay smashed into the carpeted floor, surrounded by tiny, scattered white footprints leading toward the service exit behind the head table.

"Chloe!" Graham screamed, his voice cracking with absolute panic as he spun in a complete circle, searching every dark corner of the devastated room.

A soft, muffled whimpering sound echoed from inside the walk-in linen closet located behind the kitchen doors. Graham sprinted toward the sound, throwing his shoulder against the heavy wooden door until the latch splintered and gave way.

Inside the cramped, dark closet, huddled in a pile of white tablecloths, sat little Chloe, clutching a silver pocket watch that had belonged to his grandfather—the very watch Julian used to carry everywhere he went.

And sitting right beside the toddler, holding a silenced pistol pointed directly at the floor, was Arthur Pendelton.
