Chapter 2 - The Stranger in the Hallway

The heavy oak doors of the banquet hall creaked open an inch further, revealing a narrow strip of harsh fluorescent light from the service corridor. Graham didn't drop his fierce glare at Clara, but his body coiled like a spring, ready to shield little Chloe from whatever threat had just breached their private nightmare. Clara’s breath caught in her throat, her face turning a stark, chalky white as she stared past Graham's broad shoulder toward the darkened entryway.
"Who's there?" Graham shouted, his voice ringing out with enough authority to rattle the crystal flutes left untouched on the guest tables.
A tall man in a rumpled charcoal suit stepped out of the shadows, holding a thick manila folder in one hand and a digital voice recorder in the other. He didn't look like a wedding guest; he looked like an executioner delivering a final warrant. His eyes flicked from Graham’s furious expression down to the trembling toddler holding the frosted cupcake, and finally settled on Clara with a chilling familiarity.
"I'm sorry to interrupt the reception, Mr. Vance," the stranger said smoothly, his voice devoid of any genuine remorse. "Detective Miller, juvenile division. I'm afraid we need to have a very serious conversation about the custody arrangements of the minor child currently in your arms."
Graham’s arms tightened around Chloe instinctively, pulling the little girl so close she let out a soft whimper. "Custody? What are you talking about? She's my daughter. Clara and I just got married twenty minutes ago."
"That's legally complicated, sir," Detective Miller replied, stepping further into the warm candlelight of the ballroom. He flipped open the manila folder, revealing a stack of legal documents stamped with state seals. "According to the family court filings processed less than an hour ago by Mrs. Vance—or rather, Ms. Clara Hayes, prior to this ceremony—little Chloe isn't your biological child at all. In fact, she was placed in your temporary care under false pretenses as part of an ongoing fraud investigation."
Clara slumped against the edge of the head table, her sequined gown rustling like dry leaves as she buried her face in her hands. "I had to do it, Graham," she sobbed softly. "It was the only way to keep her safe from the real monster."
Graham stared at Clara, the world spinning off its axis. "You lied about who she is? Who is her father, Clara?"

Detective Miller answered before Clara could speak, sliding a single photograph across the polished wooden table between them. "That's what we're here to find out, Mr. Vance, and the man whose name is on this birth certificate was reported missing this morning."
