Chapter 6 - The CFO's Betrayal

The name hung in the dense, dusty air of the ruined ballroom like a physical blow. Arthur Pendelton had been Graham’s closest confidant, a man who had worked alongside their family for over twenty years, managing the intricate portfolio of Vance Enterprises with a quiet, unassuming competence.
"Arthur?" Graham repeated, the absurdity of the accusation momentarily overriding his shock. "That's ridiculous. Arthur has been with my family since my father’s era. He attended my parents' funerals. He helped me rebuild the firm after the market crash three years ago."
"And he’s also the primary beneficiary of the offshore shell corporation that received your brother’s embezzled funds," Detective Miller stated sharply, snapping his holster shut and pocketing his badge. He stepped closer to Clara, his eyes narrowing. "Mrs. Vance, if you knew Arthur Pendelton was involved in this financial embezzlement scheme, why on earth would you agree to marry into the family he was allegedly trying to ruin?"
Clara pulled her torn sequined skirt around her legs, hugging her knees as she sat on the edge of the velvet chair next to sleeping Chloe. "Because Arthur threatened me," she said, her voice dropping to a fragile, broken tone. "Three days ago, he cornered me in the parking garage of my apartment building. He showed me pictures of my aging mother living in her assisted-living facility. He told me that if I didn't help him frame Julian for corporate espionage, and if I didn't successfully marry you today to secure the final voting shares of Vance Enterprises, my mother's medical funding would be cut off immediately, and she would be put out on the street."
Graham stared at her, a bitter pill forming in his throat. Every single moment of their two-year relationship suddenly flashed before his eyes in a new, horrifying light—the sudden coincidences, the quiet phone calls she always took in the hallway, the hesitation before she finally said yes to his marriage proposal six months ago.
"You married me out of blackmail," Graham said quietly, the anger draining out of him, leaving behind only a hollow, crushing emptiness. "Every single word of love you ever spoke to me... was part of their script."
"No!" Clara cried out, reaching desperately for his hand, but Graham pulled back as if she were burning hot. "At first, yes! It started as a trap set by Arthur. But as time went on, Graham... I swear to you, my feelings for you became real. I fell in love with your kindness, the way you cared for your employees, the way you looked at me when you thought I wasn't paying attention. That's why I tried to warn Julian last week. That's why I hid Chloe under the table today—because I saw Arthur walk into the back of the banquet hall carrying a silenced pistol just as the ceremony ended."
Graham’s breath caught. He looked down at the floor where the frosted cupcake still lay partially crushed beside a piece of fallen crystal. Chloe had been hiding because Clara was trying to save her life from a cold-blooded killer standing just feet away during their wedding vows.
Before Graham could process the revelation, Detective Miller’s radio clipped to his shoulder erupted in a burst of static and frantic dispatch chatter.
"Unit Four, respond! We have an active shooter report in the hotel's underground parking structure! Shots fired near a black luxury sedan registered to Vance Enterprises!"

Graham’s head snapped toward Miller. "That's my car."
