Chapter 10 - The Closet Confrontation

Arthur Pendelton looked remarkably calm for a man who had just blown up a chandelier and planted a bomb in the basement. He wore a crisp, tailored grey suit that didn't have a single speck of dust on it, his silver hair neatly combed back from his furrowed brow. He lowered the silencer slightly as Graham stumbled into the cramped linen closet, his chest heaving with ragged breaths.
"Ah, Graham," Arthur said smoothly, his voice carrying the gentle, paternal warmth he had used to comfort Graham after his parents died. "I told you years ago that running a multi-national conglomerate requires making difficult, unpleasant sacrifices. You never quite had the stomach for it, did you?"
Graham stood frozen in the doorway, his fists clenched so tightly his fingernails dug deep into his palms, drawing tiny beads of blood. "Let her go, Arthur. She's three years old. She has nothing to do with this."
Arthur glanced down at little Chloe, who was staring up at him with wide, unblinking eyes, silently clutching the antique pocket watch against her chest. A faint, sad smile touched the corners of Arthur’s mouth.
"She's Julian's daughter, Graham. Do you really think I could leave loose ends like that lying around after what your brother tried to pull?" Arthur sighed softly, shifting the grip on his firearm. "Julian was weak. He got cold feet at the last second, threatened to go to the federal prosecutors with the Meridian files, and left me no choice down by the cistern. It’s a shame, really. I always liked Julian better than you."
Graham took a slow, calculated step forward, keeping his eyes locked on Arthur’s trigger finger. "You murdered my brother, and now you think you can just walk out of here with my daughter? The police are already downstairs, Arthur. The building is being evacuated. You're surrounded."
Arthur let out a low, humorless chuckle. "Surrounded? Graham, look around you. This hotel is owned by a shell corporation registered under Vance Enterprises. Every security camera, every electronic lock, and every emergency exit on this floor is wired directly into my personal tablet."
As if to punctuate Arthur's words, the heavy iron fire doors at both ends of the hallway slammed shut with a synchronized, mechanical thud, locking from the outside with a heavy series of magnetic clicks.
"You're trapped in here with me, Graham," Arthur said, raising the barrel of the silenced pistol until it pointed directly at the center of Graham’s chest. "And when that little bomb in the basement detonates in exactly twenty seconds, the official police report will state that the newlywed groom suffered a tragic mental breakdown, killed his bride, and blew up the entire banquet hall in a fit of jealous rage."

Before Graham could lunge forward, a sudden, blinding flash of light erupted from the hallway behind him as the entire wall of windows blew inward with a tremendous roar.
