Chapter 14 - The Final Stand

Arthur Pendelton looked remarkably composed for a man who had just been knocked unconscious on a marble floor. He held the two service pistols with practiced ease, his finger resting casually outside the trigger guards as he aimed them directly at Julian and Graham. The federal agents standing beside him stood like statues, completely subdued by some chemical agent or subtle threat that had rendered them temporarily helpless.

"Did you really think a simple punch to the jaw was going to stop a fifty-year career in corporate intelligence, Julian?" Arthur asked, a cold, mocking smile playing across his lips. "I built this empire from the ground up, long before your father even knew what international trade meant."

Graham stepped instinctively in front of little Chloe, shielding the toddler with his body while keeping his eyes locked on Arthur’s weapon. "It's over, Arthur. The federal police are outside, the SEC has the financial logs, and your Meridian Bio-Tech files are already being downloaded to DOJ servers."

"Files?" Arthur laughed softly, shaking his head. "Meridian was never a pharmaceutical company, Graham. It was a black-ops funding vehicle for foreign intelligence. And right now, sitting in my breast pocket, is a digital encryption key that will automatically release classified state secrets to every hostile government agency on the planet if my heart rate drops below sixty beats per minute."

Detective Miller reached slowly for his secondary holster, but Arthur’s aim snapped instantly toward him with terrifying speed.

"Don't even think about it, Detective," Arthur warned, his voice dropping to a harsh, venomous whisper. "One twitch of my finger, and this entire hotel block becomes a smoking crater."

Clara took a slow, silent step toward the side of the room, her eyes darting frantically toward the heavy service cart resting near the shattered window. On top of the cart sat a heavy silver-plated champagne bucket filled with thick, melting ice.

Arthur noticed the movement out of the corner of his eye and swung his left pistol toward her. "Ah-ah, Mrs. Vance. Stay right where you are. You've caused quite enough trouble today."

"You ruined my life, Arthur," Clara whispered, her voice trembling with rage as she suddenly grabbed the heavy silver champagne bucket with both hands and hurled it with every ounce of her strength directly at Arthur's face.

Arthur instinctively flinched, ducking his head to avoid the flying metal bucket.

In that split second of distraction, Julian lunged forward like a striking panther, tackling Arthur hard across the chest and sending both men crashing through the remaining wooden partition of the linen closet in a violent explosion of splintered wood and flying dust.
