Chapter 8 - The Bulletproof Alibi

The deafening report of gunfire echoed off the low concrete ceiling of the parking garage, sending sparks flying as a bullet slammed into the concrete pillar mere inches from Graham’s head. Concrete dust rained down over his hair and shoulders as he scrambled backward, dragging Clara behind the solid protection of an industrial-sized commercial dumpster.

Detective Miller returned fire, emptying three rapid shots toward the front tires of the silver SUV, but the vehicle was already reversing at breakneck speed, its tires squealing against the polished floor as it whipped around the central column and vanished back up the ramp toward the street level.

"Damn it!" Miller cursed, slamming his empty magazine out and slapping a fresh one into his service pistol with practiced efficiency. He keyed his shoulder mic. "All units, intercept a late-model silver SUV heading north on Michigan Avenue! Suspect is armed and dangerous, connected to a homicide investigation!"

Graham stood up slowly, brushing the concrete dust off his expensive black tuxedo pants. His heart was hammering against his ribs like a trapped bird, but the initial panic had given way to a cold, razor-sharp fury. He looked at Clara, who was shaking uncontrollably, her hands covered in dirt and dried blood from a scrape on her knee.

"You said Arthur Pendelton was doing this to protect his own skin," Graham said, his voice dangerously low. "Explain to me right now why my CFO is trying to murder us in a parking garage instead of just boarding a flight to the Cayman Islands."

Clara swallowed hard, wiping her tear-stained face with the back of her trembling hand. "Because the money isn't in the Cayman Islands, Graham. It’s tied up in a private pharmaceutical research firm called Meridian Bio-Tech—the same firm your father funded secretly before he passed away."

Miller stopped in his tracks, turning back to face her with sharp suspicion. "Meridian Bio-Tech? That company was liquidated five years ago after a major clinical trial scandal involving experimental neurological drugs."

"It was never liquidated," Clara corrected quietly, pulling a small, encrypted flash drive out from the hidden lining of her torn sequined bodice and holding it out toward Graham. "Julian found out about it three weeks ago. He discovered that Arthur and your father weren't just developing medical treatments—they were running unauthorized human trials on disadvantaged subjects in order to secure a multi-billion-dollar government defense contract."

Graham stared at the tiny black flash drive in her palm, the world he thought he knew crumbling into dust around him. "My father? My father was involved in illegal human experimentation?"

"And your brother was planning to blow the whistle on the entire operation," Clara continued, her voice breaking. "That’s why Julian had to disappear. And that’s why Arthur couldn't let you or me walk out of that wedding banquet alive today. We know too much."

Miller stepped forward, reaching out to take the flash drive from Clara's hand. "If this drive contains what you say it does, we have enough evidence to bring down half the corporate board of Vance Enterprises by tonight."

As Miller’s fingers closed around the plastic casing of the flash drive, a loud, metallic click echoed from the elevator bank behind them, followed by the slow, deliberate chime of the arrival bell.
