Chapter 12 - The Resurrection

Graham stopped dead in his tracks, his breath catching in his throat as he stared down through the blown-out window at the courtyard below. Julian Vance stood alive and breathing under the flashing red and blue lights of a police cruiser, talking quietly to an FBI handler while wiping a thick bandage off the side of his temple.
"Julian?" Graham whispered, the word barely audible over the roaring wind blowing through the shattered window frame.
Chloe raised her head from Graham’s shoulder, her wide, tear-filled eyes locking onto the man standing down below. She pointed a tiny, trembling finger toward the courtyard and let out a soft, joyful gasp. "Daddy!"
Julian looked up instantly at the sound of his daughter's voice, his tired, bruised face breaking into a bright, overwhelming smile as he spotted Graham holding the toddler in the ruined ballroom above. Julian raised his hand slowly, waving back up at them before speaking urgently to the federal agents beside him and pointing toward the service elevator.
Detective Miller holstered his weapon, letting out a long, exhausted breath. "Well, Mr. Vance. It looks like your family drama just got a whole lot more complicated."
A few moments later, the heavy service elevator doors chimed and slid open, revealing Julian stepping out into the smoke-filled corridor, looking battered, bruised, but entirely real. He didn't waste a second, rushing across the ruined banquet floor toward Graham and his daughter.
"Graham! Thank God," Julian breathed, his voice cracking with raw emotion as he reached out and gently pulled little Chloe from Graham’s arms into his own embrace, burying his face in her soft blonde hair. "I was so afraid they had reached you before the feds could intercept."
Graham stood frozen, staring at his brother—the man whose funeral they had practically prepared for less than an hour ago based on a planted ring and a rigged cistern body. A complex whirlwind of anger, relief, and profound confusion washed over him.
"You're alive," Graham said flatly, his voice devoid of warmth as he crossed his arms over his torn tuxedo jacket. "You let everyone believe you were murdered. You let Clara get blackmailed into marrying me under false pretenses. You left a dead body wearing your wedding ring in a water cistern. And you expect me to just stand here and smile?"
Julian gently set Chloe down, letting the little girl hold onto the hem of his rumpled coat while he turned to face his older brother with a somber, penitent expression.
"I didn't plant that body in the cistern, Graham," Julian said quietly. "Arthur did. That was an unidentified homeless man from the downtown district dressed in my spare suit to fake my death so the feds would close the investigation and stop looking into Meridian Bio-Tech."

Before Graham could demand an explanation, Clara stepped out from the shadows of the ruined hallway, her sequined gown torn and stained with soot, her eyes fixed entirely on Julian with a chilling, dangerous intensity.
