Chapter 4 - The Cistern Discovery

The ballroom fell into a suffocating, dead silence, broken only by the distant, rhythmic hum of the hotel's industrial air conditioning units. Graham stood paralyzed, the name of his brother echoing in the empty space between them like a ghost summoned from the grave. Chloe stirred against his chest, letting out a tiny sigh before sinking back into her exhausted slumber, completely unaware that the world she knew had just imploded.
"A body?" Graham’s voice was barely a whisper, strained and hoarse. "Are you entirely certain it's Julian? It could be a mistake. People wear similar jewelry all the time."
Detective Miller shook his head slowly, reaching into his interior coat pocket to pull out a clear plastic evidence bag. Inside rested a heavy platinum band, deeply engraved along the inner edge with initials that Graham knew by heart.
"We found this on the victim's left ring finger, Mr. Vance," Miller said quietly. "J.V. to M.R., forever. Matched with dental records from his Chicago dentist obtained an hour ago, there is no doubt left. Your brother is dead."
Clara let out a sharp, choked gasp, her knees buckling beneath her heavy sequined dress. She hit the floor with a dull thud, her hands flying to her mouth to stifle a rising wave of hysterical sobs. "No... no, that's not possible," she choked out between gasps. "I spoke to him on the phone just forty-eight hours ago. He said he was hiding in the botanical gardens across town. He said he was going to meet us after the ceremony to take Chloe back."
Graham looked down at Clara crumpled on the floor, a complex storm of pity, betrayal, and blinding fury warring inside his chest. "You knew he was in town?" Graham demanded, stepping forward, though he kept a protective barrier around the sleeping toddler. "You knew my brother was hiding in this city, and you didn't tell me? You let me stand at that altar and recite vows while my brother's body was rotting underneath our feet in a water cistern?"
"I was trying to protect you!" Clara wept, looking up with desperate, bloodshot eyes. "Julian made me swear! He said if the men who were hunting him found out you were helping, they would target your company, your home, everyone you love!"
Miller interrupted, holding up a hand to halt the argument. "Mrs. Vance—or Ms. Hayes—let's be very clear about something. Hiding evidence of a homicide investigation and failing to report a missing person in connection with a major financial crime makes you an accessory. Unless you start telling us right now who walked into your dressing room this morning before the wedding."
Clara froze, the color draining entirely from her face as she stopped crying instantly. Her eyes darted toward the tall stained-glass windows overlooking the city streets below.
"What dressing room visitor?" Graham asked, his eyes narrowing as he stared down at his new wife. "Clara, who was in your room?"

Before Clara could form a response, the massive crystal chandelier above the center of the ballroom flickered violently once, twice, and then shattered into a thousand glittering shards that rained down across the empty banquet tables.
